R' Moshe Weisz, the Rav of Lápos and Zborov, passed away 110 years ago, on 27th Av, 5676. He was born in 1839 in Ungvár (Uzhhorod), where his maternal grandfather, the famous Rabbi Meir Asch, served as chief rabbi. Moshe's father, Rabbi Tzvi Weisz, was also a rabbi, serving first in Szerednye, then in Zborov, followed by Magyarlápos, afterwards in Sobrance, and finally in Dambrowa in Galicia.
Moshe Weisz's first wife, Rozalia (Roza) Weinberger, a native of Dukla in Galicia, died at a young age. His second wife, Hena Frumet, was a daughter of Rabbi Yitzchok Eisik Friedman, the Orthodox Rav of Nyíregyháza.
Rabbi Moshe Weisz initially served as rabbi in Magyarlápos, one of his father's former communities. In 1890 he moved to Zborov in Sáros County, where he continued his rabbinical service. After his death, his son, Rabbi Yosef, succeeded him as the community's rabbi.

Száztíz éve ezen a napon, 5676. Áv 27-én halt meg Weisz Mózes (Mose) magyarláposi és zborói rabbi. 1839-ben született Ungváron, ahol anyai nagyapja, a híres Meir Asch volt a főrabbi. Mose édesapja, Weisz Cví szintén rabbi volt, előbb Szerednyén, azután Zborón, majd Magyarlaposon, utána Szobráncon, végül a galíciai Dambrowában.
Weisz Mózes első felesége, a duklai (Galícia) származású Weinberger Rozália fiatalon meghalt; a második felesége, Hena Frumet, Friedman Eizik nyíregyházai ortodox főrabbi lánya volt. Weisz Mózes először apja korábbi állomáshelyén, Magyarláposon volt rabbi, ahonnan 1890-ben költözött át a Sáros megyei Zboróra. Halála után fia, R. Joszef lett az új rabbi.

R' Moshe Aharon Eppler, the Magid of the Budapest Chevra Shas, passed away one hundred years ago, on 1 Av, 5686. He was born in Sobotište (Ószombat, Szobotist, former Nitra County), his parents were Yosef Leib Eppler and Esther nee Weisz. He was Talmid of R’ Koppel Reich of Szobotist (the later Rav of Budapest Orthodox Community) and of the Shevet Sofer of Pressburg.
Succeeding his father-in-law, Rabbi Wolf Sofer, he served from the age of twenty-two for fifty years as Maggid and secretary of the Budapest Chevra Shas on Vasvári Pál Street. He was brother-in-law of the Budapest Rosh Beth Din R’ Mordechai Efraim Fishl Sofer. He is buried in the Gránátos Street cemetery.

Száz éve ezen a napon, 5686. Áv hónap első napján halt meg Eppler Mózes (Mose Aharon), a budapesti Talmudegylet előadója. 1855-ben született a Nyitra megyei Ószombaton (Szobotist, Sobotište), szülei Eppler Joszef Léb és Weisz Eszter voltak. Az akkor szobotisti (később verbói és budapesti) főrabbi, Reich Koppel, majd a pozsonyi Sévet Szófer tanítványa volt. Apósa, Szófer Wolf utódjaként 22 éves korától, 50 éven át volt a Vasvári Pál utcai Budapesti Talmud Egylet előadója és titkára. Sógora, Sussman Viktor (R. Mordechaj Efraim Fisl Szófer) a budapesti ortodox hitközség rabbija volt. A Gránátos utcai temetőben fekszik.

Aharon Halevi (Adolf) Tauber, who passed away one hundred years ago today, on the 23rd of Tammuz, was not himself a rabbi, but he came from a distinguished and renowned rabbinic family.
He was born in 1864 in Nagytétény, where his father, R’ Yehoshua Halevi Tauber, served as chief rabbi. His paternal grandfather, R’ Aharon Tauber, author of Yad Aharon (who was originated from Leipnik, Moravia and died in Serdahel) was rabbi of Bátorkeszi. On his mother's side, Adolf Tauber was related to R’ Yitzchak Kramer of Érsekújvár (Nové Zámky).
Adolf Tauber lived in Budapest, where he operated an Orthodox kosher restaurant on Rombach Street. He’s buried in the Gránátos Street Cemetery.

Tauber Adolf (Aharon halévi), aki száz évvel ezelőtt ezen a napon, Támmuz 23-án halt meg, nem volt rabbi, de híres és illusztris rabbicsaládból származott. 1864-ben született Nagytétényben, ahol édesapja, Tauber Jehosua halévi volt a főrabbi. Apai nagyapja, a morvaországi Leipnikből származott és Dunaszerdahelyen elhunyt Tauber Áron, a Jad Aharon szerzője, Bátorkesziben volt rabbi. Anyai ágon pedig Kramer Jicchok érsekújvári rabbival álltak rokonságban.
Tauber Adolf Budapesten élt, a Rombach utcában üzemeltetett ortodox kóser vendéglőt. A sírja a Gránátos utcai temetőben található.

1994-ben, a Makóról elszármazottak világtalálkozóján ismertem meg, a Sosana nevű nővérével és Majer nevű bátyjával együtt.
A találkozóról írt Egy lépés Jeruzsálem felé című riportban ezt írtam róla:
„Állandóan zsidóztak, és mindenféle csúfneveket kaptunk. Egyik-másik tanár igazi antiszemita volt, emlékszem például egy orosztanárnőre, borzalmas volt” – panaszolja vidáman Gombó Gábor. Változatos korban nőtt fel, negyvenegyben született a magyar Alföldön, mire hároméves lett, meglátta a Bergen-Belsenig terjedő világot; egy megszállt országból vitték el, egy mások által megszálltba tért vissza; héderbe még a köztársaságban járt, általánosba már a népi demokráciában; és a soltvadkerti jesiva is, ahová 55-ben került, még a Sztálin út 9. alatt volt, de egy évre rá, mikor otthagyni kényszerült, már nemcsak az utcatáblát verték le, hanem a táblákat leverő forradalmat is.
„Elnyomás, szolgasors / Ez volt a rend ezer évig” – énekli.

Nagyon barátságos volt és valódi egyéniség.

I met him in 1994 at the World Reunion of Former Residents of Makó, together with his sister Sosana and his brother Majer.
In my report on the gathering, entitled "One Step Toward Jerusalem", I wrote the following about him:

“There was continuous Jew-bashing, we acquired all kinds of nicknames. Some of the teachers were real anti-Semites; for example, I remember a Russian teacher, she was horrible,” complained Gábor Gombó cheerfully. He grew up in a time of change; he was born in ’41 in the Hungarian plains, but by the time he was three years old, he had seen the world spreading to Bergen-Belsen, he was taken from a land besieged by one country and returned to one besieged by another country. He went to kheder in a republic, by the time he was in grade school it was the People’s Republic. When he got to the yeshivah in Soltvadkert, where he arrived in ’55, it was at 9 Stalin Road, but a year later, the street signs were knocked down, and then the revolution toppling them was knocked down as well.
“Oppression, servitude/ This was the order of life for a thousand years” – he sings.

I remember him as an unusual but very friendly man.

R' Chaim Mordechai Yaakov Gottlieb, the Rabbi of the Sefard Congregation of Miskolc, passed away ninety years ago, on the 8th of Tamuz, 5696. He was the son of Avraham Gottlieb, and g-grandson of R’ Yaakov Gottlieb of Chust and Bajom, and the son-in-law Chaim Tzvi Segal of Majdan. R’ Gottlieb served as Dayan in Majdan, and then as Rav of Borsa, Viseu de Sus and later in Rozavlea. In 1926, he was invited to serve as rabbi of the Sephardic (Hasidic) Congregation in Miskolc (96 Arany János Street). After his death, he was succeeded by his son, Rabbi Yudah Gottlieb.

Kilencven éve, 5696. Támmuz 8-án, szombatról vasárnapra virradó éjjel halt meg Gottlieb Jakab (Chajim Mordecháj Jákov) miskolci szefárd főrabbi. Gottlieb Avraham fia, Gottlieb Jakab huszti és biharnagybajomi főrabbi dédunokája és Szegál Chajim Cví majdánkai kereskedő veje volt. A Máramaros megyei Majdánkán, azután Borsán, Felsővisón és legvégül Rozálián működött rabbiként. 1926-ban választották meg a miskolci szefárd imaegyesület (Arany János utca 96.) rabbijának. Halála után fia, Gottlieb Juda rabbi lett az utóda.

Rabbi Chaim Sofer (Joachim Schreiber), a Talmid of the Chatam Sofer, and served as Rav of Gyömöre, Sajószentpéter, Munkács, and later Pest, and was the first chief rabbi of the young Orthodox Jewish community of Budapest, and the author of the responsa Machaneh Chaim, died 140 years ago, on the 25th of Sivan, 5646 (1886), aged of 65 years. He was buried in the Pressburg Jewish cemetery, near the graves of his parents.

Szófer Chajim (Schreiber Joachim), a Hatam Szófer tanítványa, gyömörei, sajószentpéteri, munkácsi és pesti rabbi, a fiatal budapesti ortodox hitközség első főrabbija, a Machne Chajim című könyv szerzője, száznegyven éve, 5646. (1886.) Sziván 25-én halt meg, 65 évesen. A pozsonyi temetőben, a szülei közelében temették el.

𝗥' 𝗣𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗵𝗮𝘀 𝗞𝗹𝗲𝗶𝗻, the Cantor of Irsa (Albertirsa, Hungary), passed away 110 years ago, on the 24th of Sivan, 5676. He was the son of R' Chaim Tzvi Klein and Nachma nee Leitner, and a Talmid of the Ktav Sofer of Pressburg, and the son-in-law of R’ Yuda Meisner of Dévaványa. He lived for 74 years, and buried in the Jewish cemetery of Albertirsa.

Ma 110 éve ezen a napon, 5676. Sziván 24-én halt meg Klein Fülöp albertirsai kántor. Klein Chajim Cví dévaványai kereskedő és Leitner Nachma fia, a pozsonyi Kszav Szofer tanítványa és Meisner Juda dévaványai rabbi veje volt. 74 évet élt, és Albertirsán, az Akácfa utcai temetőben nyugszik.

Százhatvan éve ezen a napon, 5626. Sziván 23-án halt meg Aszód Jehuda rétei, szenci és dunaszerdahelyi főrabbi. 70 éves volt.
