COP30 has officially started in Belém, Brazil, right in the heart of the Amazon.

But why should we care?

Because what’s discussed here will decide how we live tomorrow: the food we eat, the air we breathe, and the safety of the places we call home.

The Amazon is often called the planet’s lungs absorbing billions of tons of CO₂ every year. Yet deforestation, pollution, and extractive industries are pushing it toward an irreversible tipping point. This summit is not about promises anymore. At Nueva Esperanza Cemetery, one of Latin America’s largest open cemeteries, spread across 60 hectares and home to over one million niches, life and death meet in the most human way.

Here, life is celebrated even in death: families share traditional Peruvian foods, play music, dance, and honor their loved ones with joy and remembrance. 🌄

An Endangered Primate You’ve Probably Never Heard Of 🐒💚

High in the cloud forests of northern Peru lives a species found nowhere else on Earth, the Yellow-Tailed Woolly Monkey (Lagothrix flavicauda). 🐒

Once thought to be extinct, it was rediscovered in 1974. Today, it’s critically endangered due to deforestation, hunting, and the loss of its habitat. 🌳💔

Organizations like Yunkawasi and local communities are working to protect this species and restore the forest that sustains it.

💚 Protecting this monkey means protecting the life of Peru’s Andean-Amazonian ecosystems.

En los bosques nublados del norte del Perú habita una especie única en el planeta: el Mono Choro de Cola Amarilla (Lagothrix flavicauda). 🐒

Se creyó extinto hasta que fue redescubierto en 1974. Hoy está en peligro crítico debido a la deforestación, la caza y la pérdida de su hábitat. 🌳💔

Gracias al trabajo de Yunkawasi y las comunidades locales, aún hay esperanza para su conservación.
