Portrait of the Patchouli Trade in Tapaktuan, Aceh, Indonesia (1929)

This historical photograph captures activities at the Tapaktuan harbor in Aceh between January 15 and February 16, 1929. Visible in the image are bundles of patchouli leaves and stems (Pogostemon cablin), commonly known as patchouli, prepared for distribution and trade. The presence of local residents around these commodities reflects the economic significance of the patchouli trade in Aceh during that period.

In the early hours of January 19, 1996, around 8:30 PM WIB, the KMP Gurita departed from Malahayati Port in Aceh Besar, Aceh, Indonesia, heading toward Balohan Port in Sabang, Weh Island (Aceh, Indonesia). What was meant to be a short sea crossing of about two hours turned into one of the most tragic maritime disasters in the region.

The ferry was reportedly carrying far beyond its intended capacity when it entered the waters of the Malacca Strait near Sabang, Aceh, Indonesia. It was suddenly hit by severe weather conditions strong winds and high waves. Shortly after, the vessel experienced engine failure, lost control, tilted heavily, and capsized before sinking rapidly into deep sea waters off Sabang, Aceh.

According to various media reports and historical records, there were around 378 people on board. Only about 40 people survived, while approximately 338 were confirmed dead or went missing.

One survivor described the moment as complete chaos. The ship’s lights went out, the vessel tilted sharply, and passengers screamed in panic in total darkness. When the ferry overturned, he was thrown into the sea and managed to survive by holding onto floating debris. He recalled hearing cries for help gradually fading into the distance until he was left drifting alone for hours in the cold, dark sea before being rescued by fishermen the following morning near Sabang waters, Aceh, Indonesia.

In this rare photo from around 1905, two Acehnese nobles sit as prisoners after being captured by Dutch colonial forces during the Aceh War.

The man second from the left is Teuku Djoehan (Teuku Johan), the ruler of Seunagan. Beside him sits his brother, Teuku Keumangan. Behind them stands First Lieutenant H.J. Schmidt, commander of the Dutch Marechaussee post in Djeuram (Jeuram), who led the operation.

What makes this image powerful is the contrast it captures — the calm posture of the Dutch officers against the tense expressions of the Acehnese nobles who had just lost their freedom.

For Aceh, this was more than a military arrest. It was part of a long and painful struggle against colonial rule that lasted for decades.
