Hand-Digging a Hidden Underground Home in the Woods Deep in the forest he marked out a rectangle and started digging — by hand, spade and pickaxe only. Out came a huge pit, then a gravel bed, block walls, heavy timber beams and a boarded roof with a single hatch and a steel ladder. He waterproofed it, buried the whole thing under the soil he'd dug out, then laid the turf, dry leaves and twigs back over the top until the forest floor looked untouched and only the hatch remained. Down the ladder he built the inside out: insulated floor, insulated boarded walls, a rustic kitchen, warm lights off a portable power station, sofa and rug. Then he broke through the right wall and dug a second room straight into the earth — propped it, trenched it, ran a drain pipe, gravel, membrane, insulated and tiled it into a full bathroom. Hidden underground home, all dug by hand. Full build timelapse

I Stacked Firewood Into Walls and Put a Turf Roof on Top I cleared a small patch in a spruce forest and started splitting logs — not for the fire, but for the walls. On a gravel trench and a knee-high fieldstone base I stood timber corner posts, then filled between them with cordwood masonry: hundreds of short split logs laid end-on in lime mortar, log end after log end, with the joints raked back so every end stands proud. The roof went on as boards, membrane and thick slabs of turf, so it grows grass. Inside I left the walls exactly as they are — raw log ends and mortar, no cladding — laid a plank floor, set a small cast-iron stove with its flue through the roof, and put up shelves and a table. Then I built a deck outside, rolled a wooden tub onto it, hooked up a wood-fired heater, filled it bucket by bucket and lit the fire until the steam came up through the spruce branches.

This crack in the rock now has two floors, a staircase and a bedroom in the sky A natural crack in a granite outcrop, three meters wide and three men tall — one man roofed it over with his own beams, closed the front with a two-storey wall, and built a full two-floor home between the rock walls: a living room below, a staircase along the stone, and a loft bedroom right under the roof. 🪨🔨

Abandoned railway tunnel + 74 days = a home under a stone vault A short abandoned railway tunnel in a hillside — the stone portal and vault still perfect, sealed at the back a century ago. One man closed the arched entrance with a glass facade and a door, laid warm wood inside the old stone vault, and built a sleeping loft where the bed sits under the ancient arch facing the forest through the glass. 🚂🔨 berat
