One of the hardest parts of AI translation review is resisting the urge to improve perfectly acceptable translations.

Many linguists were trained to produce the best possible translation. So when we see a sentence that could sound more natural, our instinct is to rewrite it.

But in many AI review projects, that's not actually the goal.

The goal is often much simpler:

✓ Is it accurate?
✓ Is it clear?
✓ Is it grammatically correct?
✓ Is there no critical error?
✓ Is there no inconsistency?

If the answer is yes, the translation may already be good enough.

That's where many reviewers struggle.

Because quality isn't always about making a text sound better.

Sometimes quality means knowing when not to touch it.

Have you ever rejected a change because it was only a matter of preference rather than a genuine issue?

Sometimes the smallest details scream the loudest.
Like a tiny line on your screen.

A hyphen.
A dash.

Most people think they’re the same.
But they’re not.

I once reviewed a translation where the two went wild.

‼️ Plural forms were written with a dash and spaces

buku – buku.
anak – anak.
rumah – rumah.

It looked consistent.
But it was consistently wrong.

Because plurals in Indonesian must use a hyphen with no spaces.

buku-buku.
anak-anak.
rumah-rumah.

The dash has its own job.
To show a break in thought.
To mark a range.
To hold an aside.

Jakarta – Bandung.
2010–2015.
Dia—meskipun sibuk—tetap hadir.

Different symbols.
Different meanings.

But when applied without care, rules collapse.
And “go wild” grammar never leads to good writing.

It leads to confusion.
It leads to distraction.

And it makes the text feel less professional than it deserves.

Have you ever read a sentence that made you stop and think, “Something is definitely off here”?

That happened to me when I reviewed a translation some time ago.
The translator went all-in on reduplication.

Every plural word was doubled.

Three books became "tiga buku-buku."
Many people turned into "banyak orang-orang."

It was an endless echo of words.
A membabi-buta (“recklessly applied”) use of the plural rule that completely missed the point.

Because here’s the thing.
In Indonesian, we do use reduplication to form plurals.

Books become "buku-buku."
Children become "anak-anak."

But that’s not the whole story.

According to PUEBI, reduplication is only one way to show plurality — and not always the right one.

When there’s already a number, you don’t repeat the noun.
Three books → tiga buku ✅ (not tiga buku-buku ❌)
Five cats → lima ekor kucing ✅ (not lima ekor kucing-kucing ❌)
Many people → banyak orang ✅ (not banyak orang-orang ❌)

When a classifier or quantifier is present, the noun stays singular.

And sometimes, a noun is already plural by meaning — like pakaian (clothes).

No doubling required.
That’s the nuance.

And in translation, nuance is everything.

Follow the rule blindly, and you lose the flow.
Break the rule with purpose, and you gain clarity.

It’s a small detail, but it separates awkward language from natural language.
And it reminded me of something bigger.

Knowing the rule is essential.
But knowing when not to apply the rule is a different level of mastery.

Kenapa kalimat panjang Inggris sering bikin pusing kalau diterjemahkan?

Bahasa Inggris s**a nempelkeun banyak info dalam satu kalimat panjang.
Bahasa Indonesia lebih nyaman pakai beberapa kalimat pendek.

Contoh:

🔹 Panjang (gaya Inggris):
“Manajer yang terus memantau kemajuan tim meskipun menghadapi tantangan kerja jarak jauh memutuskan untuk memperpanjang tenggat agar semua orang bisa memberikan hasil terbaik.”

🔹 Dipecah (gaya Indonesia):
“Manajer terus memantau kemajuan tim meskipun ada tantangan kerja jarak jauh. Ia kemudian memutuskan untuk memperpanjang tenggat agar semua orang bisa memberikan hasil terbaik.”

Sama-sama benar.
Tapi yang pendek lebih mudah dicerna sehari-hari.

👉 Jadi, penerjemahan bukan cuma soal kata, tapi juga soal cara otak membagi informasi.
