The Serayu railway bridge near Maos-Kesugihan, Cilacap, is a vital part of the Cilacap-Yogyakarta railway line. Construction began in 1884-1887 and has been operational since 1894, connecting the Trans-Java line. This bridge has undergone several generations, from the colonial era, to destruction during the Japanese occupation, to the construction of a new, modern bridge in 1971 and 2014-2019. Early Construction (Colonial Era): Part of the Cilacap-Yogyakarta line (crossing Kesugihan-Maos), which was part of the first main line connecting Cilacap with Surabaya in 1894. First Bridge (1915-1916): The first Serayu River railway bridge was built and operated around 1915-1916. Japanese Occupation: The bridge was damaged by bombing during the Japanese occupation, but remains standing strong. Second Generation (1971): Due to increased traffic volume, construction of a new 210-255 meter bridge began on January 1, 1971, and was inaugurated around 1972. New/Third Bridge (2014-2019): Due to the erosion of the old bridge's foundation, a new 277.2 meter truss bridge was built and operated between 2014 and 2019 to replace the old bridge.

Did you know this is the entrance gate to the Cilacap Pendem Fort? Cilacap Pendem Fort is a coastal defense fortress from the Dutch East Indies, built between 1861 and 1879 in the Teluk Penyu area. Known as Kustbatterij op de Landtong te Cilacap, this 6.5-10.5 hectare fort was designed to be buried to protect Cilacap from naval attacks. After being occupied by the Japanese and abandoned, the fort was rediscovered and restored in 1986, and is now a historical tourist site.
