If you want to understand a city, skip the tourist trail and head straight to its market. The Green Bazaar in the heart of Almaty is as real and as vivid as Kazakhstan gets. A vast covered market that has been feeding and supplying the city for generations and remains one of the most atmospheric places in all of Central Asia. 🥩🌶️🇰🇿

Every sense gets a workout the moment you walk through the doors. Towers of dried fruit and nuts, slabs of horsemeat and lamb hanging from hooks, pyramids of spices in every shade of red and gold, fresh bread stacked high and the sound of traders calling out in Kazakh and Russian filling the air above it all.

This is where Almaty cooks, eats and connects. Grandmothers haggle over vegetables. Butchers break down whole carcasses with practiced efficiency. Tea sellers pour from steaming samovars. It is chaotic, colourful and completely wonderful.

Best time to visit: Morning when the market is at its most active and the produce is at its freshest.

Don’t miss: The dried fruit and nut section. The variety and quality on offer is extraordinary and makes for perfect and very affordable gifts to take home.

Local tip: Come hungry. Hot food stalls inside the bazaar serve some of the most authentic and best value Kazakh food in the city.
