âThose two days changed my life.
I had never considered a career in web dev, to be honest I didnât really even know what coding was but a friend forwarded me your website in a weekend challenge and I thought hey why not give it a shot?
Itâs not an exaggeration to say that those two days changed my life. They sparked a fire in me for coding and I fell in love with it from the very first lines I wrote. By the end of the weekend I wasnât just hooked I was excited - something I hadnât felt about my 9-to-5 job in a very long time.
I was nervous to take a new passion and turn it into a career but I decided thatâs lifeâs too short, so I enrolled in the digital bootcamp and the rest is history. I get to wake up every day and do something creative I love, and get paid for it. Iâm working with the best clients and my business is growing and if it wasnât for that two day weekend of coding I would probably still be stuck in a cubicle⌠so thank you.â

Day 6 of the advanced photography bootcamp here in Bali: adventure day đ´
Today was all about experiencing what it takes to be an adventure/travel/campaign photographer.
That means chasing sunrise and sunset, it means early starts and long days but it can one of the most fun/rewarding types of photography which is why we cover it in the Bali bootcamp.
We headed north from Canggu to check out a beautiful lake and majestic waterfall, taking two amazing models with us and a range of styling to give our students variety in their portfolio - from summer dresses to wintering jumpers.
When we say we go all out to make sure our students succeed, we mean it and gosh darn are we proud of what they produced in these challenging conditions đŞđź

Day 5 of the advanced photography Bali bootcamp:
After a massive day of business and editing it was so awesome to see the students decide to head out after class by themselves to take all the knowledge they had learnt over the past few days and just shoot to have fun and be creative!
Itâs crazy how close our students become after just a few days together and itâs one of the elements we are most proud of - being able to create an environment that fosters collaboration and peer based learning. And while every group of students is different, there is always this common thread that ties it all together đ¤

Day 3 of the advanced photography bootcamp here in Bali and boy was it a big day.
We kicked things off with a mix of group and 1:1 sessions with mentors to help the students really dive deep into business.
Working through different elements of the business world from lifestyle alignment to goals to mindset and so much more. Taking everything we had talked about in our comprehensive digital bootcamps and taking one step further.
These days can be one of the most challenging for students but itâs also the days when big breakthroughs can happen. Our Bali bootcamp is all about pushing your skills and business to the next level so you can create the life you have always wanted.
After some nourishing food, it was time to introduce our students to some other incredible photographers who took the time to give insights into their world as successful business owners.
While we are a co-ed school, how freaking awesome is it that over 80% of students are women - so it was only fitting to have 2 extraordinarily girl bosses remind them that just whatâs possible.
We canât wait to see where our students end up after putting all of these skills & knowledge to the test once the bootcamp wraps up!

Day 2 of the advanced photography bootcamp: Interior Photography
Todays practical lesson is all about shooting interiors - we rented arguably one of the most aesthetic villas in Bali to give our students the chance to learn the art of the perfect interiors shoot. From knowing the right angles, to understanding HDR, to looking for the details, to learning the way light falls and sooo much more.
Here is a little insight into the fun the students had while running a round getting shots they needed to fulfill the âclient briefâ we had provided - our course is all about creating real world scenarios to simulate and prepare our students for a career in photography.

We wanted to write a post about KPIâs so we asked our founder what she thought was the most important KPI for someone starting their business today.
We probably shouldnât have been surprised that she said it was happiness.
âWhat about revenue, profitability, client satisfaction etc?â we asked her.
âThose are all important too, but if you chase money at the expense of happiness, it might not get you where you want to go. If you start with your vision of success, with the business thatâs going to provide you the most joy, the most freedom - everything else lines up to support that.
If you chase money you might go after the biggest clients without pausing to think about how much you enjoy working with them, or how well they respect your boundaries, or how easily you can fit your business on your own schedule. But when you look at the big picture, you build a business that supports your life.â

You know that feeling when your stomach sinks and you *realise* that you are in way over your head and donât have any idea what youâre doing? Your skin starts to crawl, you feel like a bit of a fraud and you desperately hope that nobody realises youâre not actually as talented as they think you are.
This feeling has a name, and itâs called imposter syndrome.
It can be a bit of a b*tch to deal with, but one things for certain - itâs a pretty universal experience for anyone who is pushing outside their comfort zone and trying new things.
It happens to entrepreneurs who are just starting out and to professionals at the top of their game. But when you approach it strategically you can quiet this niggling voice on your shoulder down to a whisper. Like managing a difficult family member to make it through brunch without overstaying their welcome or derailing your life.

Itâs international womenâs day and our hearts are full seeing brands all over the world taking this day to celebrate women - our feed & inbox is full of inspiring stories, diverse campaigns, and talented women.
But at IOC, championing women isnât something we need a dedicated day for - itâs built into our DNA. Itâs one of our core values, thatâs woven into every decision we make.
We crunched some numbers this week, and calculated that 93% of the students weâve taught have been women. Women from 17 to 65, from 23 different countries. Women who were at the very start of their careers, to women looking for a change of pace, a creative outlet, a way to step out of the corporate rat race and become their own boss.
In a industry thatâs traditionally very male-dominated, weâre so proud to support women as they become insanely talented web developers, photographers, and launch their own creative agencies.
Today and everyday, we celebrate women. And over the next few months weâll be sharing their stories, elevating their voices and showcasing their talents.
And we couldnât post about inspiring women without a special shout-out to our founder - sheâs the heart behind this company and has made it her mission to lift up everyone around her, to take them under her wing and give them all the tools and support they need to build a business and a life that inspired them â¤ď¸

Itâs one thing to say that you want to quit your job and pursue your business full-time but itâs another thing to actually do it.
And while saying YOLO and taking a blind leap of faith is a perfectly acceptable strategy (and one Iâm rather familiar with personally) itâs sometimes a smarter approach to have an exit plan - to crunch some numbers and figure out what you need to have in place to be confident quitting your 9-to-5.

âOMG that smells amazingggggâ
Youâll hear some variation of this at every meal time while on our Bali bootcamps - we spent a lot of time training our in-house chef team to create a menu that didnât just have the same boring food served over and over again. Think Japanese feasts, mouth watering Mexican and fresh Italian pasta to name just a few⌠donât even get us started on the deserts đ¤¤
Our team creates everything from scratch, no packets of sauce, no MSG, no cheap ingredients, all of it from scratch right down to the mayonnaise.
We know just how important the fuel you put in your body is to being productive and at your peak performance to learn, so spared no expense.

Yesterday we had a chance to jump into the studio and interview some of our incredible students (keep an eye on this space for those!) and after we wrapped up an inspiring morning of listening to their journey & waited for the torrential rain to clear, some of our staff jumped in front of the lens to get a little silly (I mean it is silly season right!) images to pass the time - we blasted the most ridiculous music and laughed/danced like kids.
As founders, we work in a super fast paced world and our business is pretty much non stop, from sunrise to well after the sun sets we are constantly pushing the envelope of what we can achieve in a single day & none, seriously none of this could be done without the incredible support from our staff (our Bali family).
And here's the thing - when you're doing work that inspires you, with surrounded by people who have got your back, you stop living for weekend and find the joy in every single day.
While these few images only show a handful of our now 12-strong team (for the rest of the staff seeing this post, you're up next) - we hope it gives you an idea of the people behind the computer that are there helping you on your journey when you join IOC.

When we started Institute of Code, we designed our courses to feel as immersive and supportive as possible. â¨â¨We spent just as much time thinking about *how* we would teach, as we did thinking about *what* we would teach, and creating an environment where every single student could thrive. â¨â¨Even after running IOC for 7 years, with hundreds of in-person students and thousands of digital ones we are are never done. We are always looking for new ways to improve and provide the best possible environment to learn.
Creating that immersive & supportive community environment definitely hasnât been as easy in digital format as having all our students on one campus in Bali, but over the past few weeks weâve revamped the community experience both for active students and our alumni to deliver even more value, help students stay fresh with changing trends and new skills, and connecting our global alumni from all over the world to each other.
Tonight we scrolled through reading & responding to the goals our mastermind students who have just wrapped up the Bali portion of their course have set in order to finish of 2022 with a bang, and itâs gotten us so inspired for whatâs to come! â¨â¨Itâs incredible what you can achieve when you combine the skills + support + community into one jam-packed program!

And just like that we wrapped up our 39th and 40th Bali bootcamps.
We werenât sure how we would feel as the first students arrived on campus after 2 years where we couldnât host any in-person bootcamps. And reflecting on the past incredible month it was everything we remembered and so much more - weâll never take these moments for granted again.
Weâve got lots weâre excited to share about the bootcamps that weâve just hosted, and some really exciting news for our 2023 bootcamps that are officially opening for enrolment next week, but for now we just want to give a huge shoutout to our incredible team for going above and beyond for our students. And to our students, youâve left us so proud, so inspired and we canât wait to support you as you build your dream businesses.

Want to know an insider tip about being a successful creator - a photographer, or web developer?
Nobody cares about your credentials.
People ask us all the time if they will get a certificate (and yes, they will) but I can tell you that in a decade of running a creative agency nobody has ever asked Emilio or myself for a certificate of our studies.

As a female entrepreneur, I was pretty shocked to discover that less than 5% of startups have a female founder or co-founder.
Even more disappointing is the fact that despite technology being one of the fasting growing areas of future opportunities, women hold less than 1/4 tech jobs⌠a ratio that hasnât grown since the early 90s.
I think that this is ridiculous.
Itâs always been a big part of our mission to empower more women to learn to code and weâre pretty proud of the results weâve had so far â over 80% of our students have been female â but we know that to #changetheratio we are going to have to keep working hard to empower and inspire more women to learn to code.

Over 10 days in a luxury pool villa, we take an ambitious group of budding and established entrepreneurs, designers, marketers - with little to no technical experience - and teach them how to build beautiful responsive websites, wield a camera, create inspirational Instagram feeds, write 12 month business strategies and more.
Our courses are hands-on and project based, meaning students will be coding, shooting, writing, pitching and strategising â you name it â from the very first day.
