Commanding Officer of Naval Station Rota, Capt. Teague Suarez, Officially Hands Over Command in Change of Command Ceremony

Rota, Spain – June 12, 2025 — Capt. Teague Suarez officially concluded his tenure as Commanding Officer of Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota, Spain, during a change of command ceremony held on Thursday, June 12, 2025. The ceremony took place at the NAVSTA Rota headquarters, often referred to as the "Gateway to the Mediterranean."

As a strategic military installation, NAVSTA Rota plays a vital role in supporting operations by the United States, NATO, and allied forces across Europe, Africa, and the Middle East. The base functions as a key logistics and support hub, enabling rapid deployment of combat-ready forces by land, air, and sea.

During his leadership, Capt. Suarez was recognized for his dedication to enhancing operational readiness and strengthening the U.S.–Spanish naval partnership. NAVSTA Rota continues to serve as a powerful force multiplier—supporting service members and their families, sustaining the fleet, and bolstering international cooperation.

The ceremony also symbolized the ongoing commitment to military collaboration between the United States and Spain in maintaining regional stability.

U.S. and Philippine Combat Engineers Build the Battlefield Together at Salaknib 2025 – A Message to the Region?

FORT MAGSAYSAY, PHILIPPINES – On May 17, 2025, U.S. Army combat engineers from the 95th Combat Engineer Company-Infantry, 130th Engineer Brigade, joined forces with Philippine Army engineers from the 503rd Combat Engineer Battalion in a critical Subject Matter Expert Exchange (SMEE) during Exercise Salaknib 2025. Their mission: to develop defensive positions and enhance the battlefield infrastructure ahead of the upcoming Joint Pacific Multinational Readiness Center training phase.

More than just a construction project, this SMEE marks a strategic demonstration of growing interoperability between two longstanding allies in a region facing increasing military tensions. As U.S. and Philippine troops built bunkers and battle positions side-by-side, the real structure being reinforced was their bilateral defense alliance—one forged in decades of joint operations and shared regional security concerns.

Salaknib 2025, the annual combined training exercise between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the U.S. military, continues to evolve in scope and ambition. It aims to enhance not only military readiness, but also trust, tactical coordination, and joint operational capacity in complex environments. And with this year’s expanded focus on engineer interoperability, logistics integration, and combat zone preparedness, some observers are calling it a quiet signal of deterrence aimed at any actor testing the balance of power in the Indo-Pacific.

AH-64 Apache, produced by Boeing (originally McDonnell Douglas), is a renowned attack helicopter known for its formidable combat capabilities. First flown on September 30, 1975, and operational since 1986, it features a crew of two comprising a pilot and a copilot/gunner. With dimensions of 17.73 meters in length, 3.87 meters in height, and a rotor diameter of 14.63 meters, the Apache has a maximum takeoff weight of 10,433 kg. Powered by twin General Electric T700-GE-701D turboshaft engines, each providing 1,994 shp, it achieves speeds up to 293 km/h and has a cruise speed of 265 km/h, with a range of 476 km and a ceiling of 6,400 meters. Armed with an M230 30 mm chain gun, Hydra 70 unguided rockets or guided APKWS II, and a variety of missiles including AGM-114 Hellfire, AIM-92 Stinger, and AIM-9 Sidewinder, the Apache is utilized by numerous countries worldwide including the United States, United Kingdom, Israel, Egypt, Japan, and others, demonstrating its pivotal role in modern aerial warfare.

HMS Dragon (D35) is a Type 45 destroyer of the Royal Navy, designed for anti-air warfare. Measuring 152.4 meters in length and 21.2 meters in beam, it is equipped with the PAAMS (Principal Anti-Air Missile System) that includes Aster 15 and Aster 30 missiles. The ship is powered by two Rolls-Royce WR-21 gas turbines, enabling a top speed of over 30 knots. HMS Dragon also features the advanced Sampson radar capable of detecting aerial threats at long ranges and has a flight deck to operate Merlin or Wildcat helicopters. Prancis baru-baru ini mengajukan penawaran kepada Indonesia untuk menggantikan fregat kelas Ahmad Yani yang sudah menua dengan kapal perang canggih baru. Penawaran ini merupakan bagian dari upaya memperkuat hubungan militer antara kedua negara dan mendukung modernisasi Angkatan Laut Indonesia.

Fregat kelas Ahmad Yani, yang sudah beroperasi selama beberapa dekade, dianggap tidak lagi memenuhi kebutuhan operasional modern. Oleh karena itu, Prancis menawarkan kapal perang yang lebih modern dan dilengkapi dengan teknologi mutakhir. Jenis kapal yang diajukan mencakup fregat kelas La Fayette atau varian terbaru yang dirancang untuk meningkatkan kapabilitas pertahanan maritim Indonesia.

Penawaran ini tidak hanya mencakup pengadaan kapal perang baru, tetapi juga kemungkinan transfer teknologi dan pelatihan bagi personel Angkatan Laut Indonesia. Dengan demikian, diharapkan mampu meningkatkan kemampuan teknis dan operasional dalam jangka panjang.
