Hamawy emerged from a crowded field of 12 candidates competing to succeed retiring Democratic Representative Bonnie Watson Coleman. He received endorsements from prominent progressive Democrats, including Bernie Sanders, Tammy Duckworth, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and Ilhan Omar.
