The Sweet started out in London in 1968 under the name The Sweetshop, finding early chart success with Funny, Funny in 1971 thanks to the songwriting duo Nicky Chinn and Mike Chapman. What began as a bubblegum pop act soon evolved into a harder, Who-inspired rock style, and by the mid-70s they became one of the UKโ€™s most exciting glam rock bands. Their run of hits included Block Buster! (which reached No.1 in 1973), Hell Raiser, The Ballroom Blitz, and Teenage Rampage, all of which stormed the charts.

International success soon followed, with songs like Little W***y, Fox on the Run, and Love Is Like Oxygen making them household names far beyond Britain, particularly in the US and across Europe. Although the classic lineup eventually split, The Sweetโ€™s legacy remains undeniable. Sadly, Brian Connolly passed away in 1997, Mick Tucker in 2002, and Steve Priest in 2020. Andy Scott, the last surviving member of the classic lineup, continues to keep The Sweet alive on stage. With more than 35 million albums sold worldwide, they secured their place as one of glam rockโ€™s defining acts. โ˜˜๏ธโค๏ธ

Neil Ellwood Peart (September 12, 1952 โ€“ January 7, 2020) was a Canadian and American musician and author, best known as the drummer, percussionist, and primary lyricist of the rock band Rush. Fans lovingly called him โ€œThe Professorโ€, a nickname inspired by the Gilligan's Island character. His drumming was celebrated for its technical mastery, precision, and stamina, earning him numerous awards, including induction into the Modern Drummer Readers Poll Hall of Fame in 1983 โ€” the youngest ever to receive the honor at just 30 years old.

Peart announced his retirement from touring in 2015, and in 2018 Rush officially disbanded due in part to his health struggles. In his final years, he lived in Santa Monica, California, with his wife, Carrie Nuttall, and their daughter. After a three-and-a-half-year battle with glioblastoma, Neil Peart passed away on January 7, 2020, at the age of 67. His legacy as one of rockโ€™s most revered drummers continues to inspire generations of musicians and fans around the world.

Alexandra Elene MacLean Denny (6 January 1947 โ€“ 21 April 1978) was an English singer-songwriter, best known as the lead vocalist of the British folk-rock band Fairport Convention. She has often been described as โ€œarguably the pre-eminent British folk-rock singer-songwriter of her time.โ€

After a brief period with the Strawbs, Denny joined Fairport Convention in 1968, remaining until 1969. In 1970, she formed the short-lived band Fotheringay before embarking on a solo career. Between 1971 and 1977, she released four solo albums: The North Star Grassman and the Ravens, Sandy, Like an Old Fashioned Waltz, and Rendezvous.

She is also remembered for her duet with Robert Plant on โ€œThe Battle of Evermoreโ€ for Led Zeppelin IV (1971) โ€” making her the only guest vocalist ever featured on a Led Zeppelin studio album.

Tragically, Denny died in 1978 at the age of 31, following head injuries sustained from a fall down a flight of stairs. Music publications such as Uncut and Mojo have since hailed her as โ€œBritainโ€™s finest female singer-songwriter.โ€ โ˜˜๏ธโค๏ธ

Wokingโ€™s very own Status Quo legend, Rick Parfitt, will forever be remembered in the town after a blue memorial plaque was unveiled on Thursday. The plaque now stands proudly in Jubilee Square, honoring the veteran rocker โ€” singer, songwriter, and guitarist of Status Quo โ€” who passed away on Christmas Eve the previous year.

Parfitt and his band achieved a UK Number 1 hit with โ€œDown Downโ€, alongside a legacy of classic rock anthems. Hundreds gathered in the square to pay their respects to their beloved rock legend, whose music โ€œgot you in the party mood,โ€ as one fan of 35 years fondly recalled.

When deciding who should be honored with a plaque, BBC Local Radio asked listeners for nominations, which were then reviewed by a committee of music industry experts. Among those present were Rick Parfitt Jr., his son, and John Coghlan, former Status Quo drummer.

Rick Parfitt Jr. admitted it was difficult to put into words what the day meant to him, but said his father โ€œwould have been so embarrassed, but so, so amazingly honored.โ€ He added: โ€œFor me as his son, knowing him as well as I did, itโ€™s hugely emotional, as I know what he would have felt.โ€ The crowd was especially moved when Parfitt Jr. shared: โ€œDad loved Woking.โ€ โ˜˜๏ธโค๏ธ (2017)

The Who had a one-of-a-kind drummer, a brilliant bassist, a towering singer โ€” and their songs also featured some impressive guitar playing. But they would never have gone anywhere if Pete Townshend hadnโ€™t developed into an endlessly innovative songwriter. Early tunes like their debut single โ€œI Canโ€™t Explainโ€ and the epochal anthem โ€œMy Generationโ€ were fueled by adolescent angst, but with each passing year Townshend became more ambitious.

He moved from a loose concept record about a pirate radio station (The Who Sell Out, 1967), to a groundbreaking rock opera about a deaf, dumb, and blind pinball star (Tommy, 1969), to a double LP about a young mod struggling with split personality disorder (Quadrophenia, 1973). His output slowed down by the mid-1980s, and he has released only two albums in the past three decades. Still, what he accomplished in The Whoโ€™s first 15 years transformed the possibilities of rock music. โ€œIf I did [release another album], I think I would want it to be something that really addressed everything that's going on in the world at the moment,โ€ he told Rolling Stone earlier this year. โ€œIโ€™m old enough and wise enough and stupid enough and have done enough dangerous s**t to say pretty much whatever I like.โ€ โค๏ธโ˜˜๏ธ

Standing on 120 Averil Road, Leicester, family, friends, and old mates gathered to pay tribute to Jon Lord, born June 9, 1941โ€”today would have been his 74th birthday. This was where he grew up, played with his brother Steve, caught sticklebacks in the brook, played football and cricket with friends, and learned the piano.

Though he left at 20 to pursue acting, it was as a musician and composer that he became a global iconโ€”first as the keyboardist for Deep Purple and Whitesnake, then later as a solo artist. Jon wasnโ€™t just a master musician; he was the first to successfully fuse rock and classical musicโ€”a โ€œmaestro,โ€ as David Coverdale called him. Humble, decent, and rare in a world of egos, he was deeply loved.

On Sunday, Leicesterโ€”the city that shaped his love for classical music and jazz, and where he saw Buddy Holly in 1958, โ€œa gig that changed everythingโ€โ€”honored him with a blue plaque at his childhood home. Family, friends, schoolmates, and the current owners stood in black and applauded.

Sara Lord, his eldest daughter, reflected: โ€œHe was fiercely proud of where he was from, and always spoke warmly of Leicester. Coming back here brings back so many good memories of this house and Humberstone Park. Itโ€™s lovely to see this.โ€

โ€œThere must be hundreds of better bass players than me,โ€ Bill Wyman said in 1974. โ€œI mean, I could never play like Jack Bruce. If I was ambitious in that direction, Iโ€™d practice, but I donโ€™t.โ€ Despite his modesty, his fellow Rolling Stones thought differently. โ€œBill Wymanโ€™s an incredible bass player,โ€ Keith Richards once remarked. โ€œIโ€™m still always amazed by Billโ€™s tastefulness in his bass playing. Heโ€™s a very sensitive musician.โ€

Wyman earned Richardsโ€™ praise through his smart harmonies under the iconic Satisfaction riff, a gentle rumble beneath Jumpinโ€™ Jack Flash, and subtle rhythms weaving through the boogie-woogie of Rocks Off. As Wyman himself put it: โ€œIโ€™m not a busy bass player. Iโ€™m not a Stanley Clarke or anyone like that. To me, they should be playing guitar, not bass. You need some balls in the bottom. You leave the space for other peopleโ€”you donโ€™t fill it in with the bass. Leave lots of room and let the track breathe from underneath.โ€ โ˜˜๏ธโค๏ธ

Eric Burdon was born in 1941 in Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne. His father, Matt, came from Tyneside, while his mother, Rene, had Irish roots before moving to Scotland and later settling in Newcastle during the 1930s. Burdon grew up in a working-class family and had a younger sister named Irene. His middle name, Victor, came from a patriotic incentive by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle, who awarded ยฃ25 to mothers who gave their newborn children suitably โ€œpatrioticโ€ names.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽBurdon described his childhood as harsh and challenging. Daily asthma attacks caused by the pollution in Newcastle, along with difficult school years, made him feel trapped in a Dickensian nightmare. His primary school stood between a slaughterhouse and a shipyard, and he endured harassment from classmates and teachers alike. Amid sadistic discipline and constant struggles, one bright spot appeared in secondary school: teacher Bertie Brown, who encouraged him to attend Newcastle College of Art and Industrial Design. There, Burdon studied graphics and photography, met future Animals drummer John Steel, and connected with other young rebels who shared his love of jazz, folk, and movies. โ˜˜๏ธโค๏ธ

Without Deep Purpleโ€™s only continuous member, Ian Paice, there would be no heavy metal drumming. An epic rock legend who has โ€œnever played with ear plugs,โ€ Paice is an old-school pro who plays fast, furious, and full-on.
โ€Ž
โ€ŽA fan of Frank Sinatra, Ringo Starr, and Count Basie drummer Sonny Payne, Paice brought a studied, infectious swing to hits like โ€œHushโ€ and โ€œSmoke on the Water.โ€ Deep Purple guitarist Steve Morse once said: โ€œHe has a swing that feels just right. And his dynamics are great. The drummer in my trio, Van Romaine, calls him the โ€˜Steve Gadd of rock.โ€™ โ€ฆ Itโ€™s like a gigantic locomotive thundering down the tracks with everything totally in sync.โ€ โ˜˜๏ธโค๏ธ
