💬John Paul II is reminding us that love is not merely something we feel or something we receive. Love is something we become capable of through a lifetime of choosing it.
We can say, "I want to be loved. I want to love." But then life begins to teach us what those words actually cost. Love asks for patience when we want to react. Forgiveness when we feel justified. Humility when our pride wants to be recognised. Faithfulness when our feelings change. And sometimes, yes, it hurts.
And I love the connection you made with Christ Himself. God could have remained distant and simply told humanity, "Love one another." Instead, He came among us. He entered our human condition. He was conceived in the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary, born, raised, obedient, hidden, misunderstood, rejected, betrayed, crucified-and through every step, He showed us what love looks like when it is lived, not merely spoken about.
Even the hidden years of Nazareth speak to this. Love was being lived quietly, day after day, through obedience, humility, work, family and surrender.
And then the Cross shows us the fullness of it.
Because perhaps when we are in the middle of our own suffering, we see the wound. We see the disappointment. We see the betrayal. We see the years that hurt. We ask, "Lord, why did I have to go through this?"
But God keeps forming us.
Day by day.
And perhaps one day, when we stand before Him, we will understand what we could not understand here.
We won't see every wound anymore.
We will see Love Himself.
Jesus.
And that reminds me of St. Teresa of Calcutta's beautiful thought that at the end of our lives, we will be judged by love. Everything else eventually falls away-the achievements, the arguments, the recognition, even the things we thought were so important.
What remains is love.
So I think the quote is not simply telling us that love takes time. It is inviting us into a way of life:
Love God today.
Forgive today.
Be patient today.
Serve today.
Choose humility today.
Begin again today.
Because love is developed day by day.
And maybe that is what holiness really is, not becoming perfect overnight, but allowing Christ to teach us how to love a little more like Him today than we did yesterday.
And when the journey is finally over, perhaps we will look back and realise that even the painful parts were being used by God to teach us how to love.
And then, as you said so beautifully:
we will no longer see the hurt.
We will see Love.
We will see Jesus.
