🚍 Ireland’s Public Transport Logic at its Finest

So here’s the story: the Government just rolled out free Leap Card travel for kids aged 5–8, expanded the student discount to literally everyone under 25, and keeps handing out more and more Free Travel Passes.

And now — surprise, surprise — they’ve “discovered” a €250 million black hole in public transport funding. The genius solution? Raise fares or cut services. Brilliant. 👏

Meanwhile on the TFI Go app, anyone can happily buy half-price student tickets — zero checks, zero questions asked.

It’s basically the same as a fast-food joint announcing: “Free burgers after 8pm!” — and then the owner scratching their head wondering why the till is empty at the end of the night. 🍔💸

But sure, keep the free rides coming… what could possibly go wrong? 🙃

An Garda Síochána reminds the public that while e-bikes and scooters can be convenient, there are laws in place to ensure they are used safely and legally.

Gorey Roads Policing Unit stopped this electric bike yesterday after it was measured travelling at 39km/h without any pedalling.

An Lie-B e-moped is a battery powered cycle that meets the following technical requirements:
• Travels at speeds of up to 45 kilometres
per hour
• Has a maximum power output of up to 4,000 watts
An Lie-B e-moped that does not need pedalling and can be powered by its motor alone is called a throttle assisted e-moped.

At this speed, it is legally classified as an L1e-b electric moped. This means it must be:
✅ Registered and taxed
✅ Covered by an insurance policy
✅ Driven only by someone holding the appropriate driving licence

In this case, the rider had none of these requirements in place. The vehicle was seized, and the rider now faces court proceedings.

✅ BIG NEWS - BALLYGARVAN TRAFFIC CALMING & FOOTPATH TO PROCEED

I am pleased to confirm that all necessary land acquisitions have been successfully completed by Cork County Council.

The Councils technical team has recently been notified that the appointed contractor intends to commence works on site during the week ending Friday, 3rd October 2025. Initial activities will include site setup and enabling works to allow access to the river. Construction of the bridge extension will follow thereafter.

The contractor has advised that the estimated duration for the full scope of works is approximately 8 weeks.

There has been a huge amount of background work going into this and I would like to thank in particular, Elaine O Regan of the Ballygarvan Community Association who worked closely on this with me for the village. It’s been a long time coming and I’m glad progress is now made.

How long we need to wait for this here?🤔

🚗 Many drivers have been asking about the new traffic signs showing a red traffic light together with a radar symbol, which are increasingly being installed in Spanish cities such as Málaga and Madrid.

🔎 How do they work❓

➡️ These signs indicate the presence of a traffic-light camera.
➡️ The system automatically detects vehicles that cross the intersection while the light is red.
➡️ If a car passes the stop line once the signal has turned red, the camera takes a photo 📸 and the driver receives a fine.

⚠️ The aim is to improve road safety, reduce accidents at intersections, and remind drivers to always respect traffic lights.

🚧 Ballinrea Cross - UPDATE 🚧

Cork Co Councils technical team has now completed the Tender Assessment Report for interim safety works. This report has been submitted to the Department of Transport for approval to proceed with the project.

Please note that an important external dependency affects Cork County Council’s timeline for delivery. This relates to the HV cable ducting works associated with the Orsted Ballinrea Solar Farm, which will pass through Ballinrea Cross.

Orsted is in the final stages of appointing a subcontractor and has submitted road opening licence applications for works at Ballinrea Cross during September, with a planned start date in November 2025. These works include:
Uisce Éireann pipe replacement
HV ducting and joint bay installation
Temporary reinstatement of the road surface

The estimated duration for these works is 7 weeks, with completion expected prior to Christmas 2025. Once these works are completed, Cork County Council will proceed with the proposed interim works scheme. Accordingly, our RLRDO technical team currently anticipates that the interim works scheme at Ballinrea Cross will commence during Q1 2026, following the completion of Orsted’s infrastructure works.

I will keep you updated on progress.
