OK, here we go. The listing for our latest offering at the Virgin Media Dublin International Film Festival. Bandit Films/Lucataire- Johnny Gogan's Prisoners of the Moon. Timed to reach audiences on the 50th Anniversary of the moon landings, it's been in production and post for 18 months or more now where Johnny has been shooting all over from Germany to the US and elsewhere, but the recent shoot for the dramatisation of the court scenes in Hazelwood etc brought it altogether. Some really great performances in there from Jim Norton, Cathy Belton, Marty Rea and Alan Devine. It will be broadcast in Ireland and North America.
Music by Steve Wickham. The talented crew included Fionn Rodgers, Niall Flynn, James Dennison Amy O'Hara Michelle Shellz Nic Andréis, Jim King and many more. Oh...cut and post production by yours truly.
The bad news is that it's sold out already.

OK, prep day done, now off on a demanding five day schedule shooting for a new dramatised TV doc for next year. We can't say much at the moment apart from that it will go out in the North America as well as here. As with most of the docs lately the content might possibly be controversial and on a certain common theme. All the best..

Hi all, OK we have a transmission date for the latest documentary from Bandit Films/Sleeping Warrior Productions etc. RTE have actually given the piece a Primetime slot. RTE1 10.35 8th August after the news.
It's a cut for a one hour slot of the feature documentary Hubert Butler - Witness to the Future, which attracted much attention and critical acclaim in screenings from London to Zagreb.
This broadcast piece is entitled "The Nuncio and the Writer" as the focus in the edit in the given time comes from the main event in his public life.

It was shot by Johnny Gogan and all post production by yours truly.
It comes with with a Caveat of large rocks landing in the pond and features such people as Olivia O'Leary, Fintan O'Toole and many more.
"This man was fifty years ahead of his time". Musical score and performance by Steve Wickham (Waterboys).

Hi there, It's ages since I posted anything on this Sleeping Warrior page so I thought a quick catchup might be in order. Since the last post we completed to post and mastering of The Leitrim Equation which was broadcast on TG4 earlier this year in January. It's out on DVD now so go get a copy from www.leitrimequation.ie/.

At the moment we're finishing a broadcast cut for RTE of Witness to the Future which is now entitled The Nuncio and the Writer for the telly. Obviously we have had to wield the knife heavily for the one hour slot but hopefully it will encourage people to find the feature length documentary to get the broader story. Seeing as the film went down on screenings around the country, in the UK and even places such as Zagreb it will be interesting to see what reaction it gets at home on TV. Of course it's great to be back cutting and deploying Steve Wickham's (of the Waterboys) score for the film. I'll post details of the broadcast date when we get them. All the best..

Here's the next film off the bench from Bandit Films cut by yours truly. Hubert Butler, Witness to the Future. It Premières at the Audi Dublin Film Festival on 22nd Feb. It's a look at the brilliant mind, life and writing of Hubert Butler, an Irishman man silenced in his own country by the State and Church for telling the truth. It might just throw a few rocks in the pond. From Kilkenny to Russia and Austria, with the 1940s genocide in Croatia and the Church's involvement being his main focus, the detective without a client is considered to be 50 years ahead of his time. As his writing becomes more valid today his description of "the extraordinary alliance of religion and crime" comes into play once again in our world. His prescient and unique writing made him one of the world's greatest exponents of the essay form. "The maker's name is on the blade". The Witness to the Future.

OK, just finished the doc for Bandit Films, Generate the State- Gin an Stait, which is due for screening at the Galway Film Fleadh on July 10th. The doc is about the building of Ardnacrusha power station. It might not sound riveting stuff but the story is quite compelling. It involves about 5000 men and some women living on the banks of the Shannon to build what DeValera called a white elephant that would never find enough customers for the power it would generate. What I found interesting is that the Irish men included those that had fought in WW1, the Rising, The War of Independence and Germans that had also probably been in WW1 too. That combined with the fact that Ireland had inherited War Reparation debt after Independence and forgave Germany that debt, brings the context into today's perspective. Mix that up with building it when the country was on it's knees, a famine in the West and a German company moving in with technology that seemed like it was from another planet, the story moves on to to consider energy options today in an interesting parallel and controversy.
So..book now to get your seats. It will be screened on TG4 and I'll let you know the date when we know it ourselves.

OK..Better post something about what I've been up to lately. Just finished the doc The Making of Jimmy's Hall about...the making of Jimmy's Hall. We shot the actual build of the hall on the bog from scratch until the final day when..you know what happens. Lots of interviews with cast and crew and the men themselves, Ken Loach and Paul Laverty and on set stuff. So..I'm sure it will be coming to a TV near you soon and on the DVD etc. In the meantime go and see the film. A great piece of work by Ken and team.
We're off on a couple of new TV docs soon so making the most of a break to upgrade equipment etc and knock it into shape, and enjoy the kids and weather. I'll try to keep this page more up to date if I can find the time. Cheers.
