In December 1994, 27-year-old Alison Botha was abducted near her apartment in Port Elizabeth, South Africa, by two individuals.

She was driven to a secluded, dark field where she suffered severe physical trauma that left her in critical condition.

Despite her injuries being described as a medical anomaly by surgeons, Alison remained conscious. Believing she wouldn’t make it, she used her fingers to scratch the names of her abusers into the sand.

Holding herself together, she managed to reach a nearby road where a passing veterinary student found her and alerted emergency services.

During her medical recovery, Alison clearly identified the men from the information she recorded.

Frans du Toit and Theuns Kruger were swiftly apprehended by local police and received life sentences in 1995.

In September 2021, in Samara Oblast, Russia, a rocket factory worker named Vyacheslav Matrosov made a horrifying discovery on his best friend Oleg’s mobile phone.

The device contained undeniable digital evidence that the longtime family friend and babysitter had been “.’-; Matrosov’s 6-year-old daughter.

Overwhelmed by anger, Matrosov bypassed local authorities and confronted his friend in a remote wooded area near Vintai village.

During the confrontation, he compelled his friend to clear an unmarked grave.

Matrosov originally faced 15 years for the crime, but prosecutors reduced the charge to “inciting self-harm”.

Former Murray County jailer Kirk Taylor Martin used a spare key to ambush his ex-girlfriend inside her Chatsworth apartment.

For nearly 15 hours, he held her captive.The situation finally broke when she managed to secretly FaceTime her mother, who immediately alerted 911.

When deputies swarmed the property, Martin was caught trying to slip out the back door and confessed on the spot.

A judge later sentenced him to 5 consecutive life sentences, plus an additional 20 years. The very first sentence explicitly strips away any possibility of parole, ensuring he spends the rest of his natural life behind bars.

Benjamin Schreiber was convicted of murder in 1996, after he unalived a 62-year-old man named John Dale Terry.

He was sentenced to life without parole in Iowa. While serving time at the Iowa State Penitentiary in 2015, severe kidney stones caused septic poisoning. He collapsed in his cell, his heart stopped, and doctors resuscitated him five times with adrenaline before he recovered.

In 2018 he filed a court motion claiming his “momentary death” fulfilled the life sentence and that the resuscitation violated a do-not-resuscitate order he had signed years earlier.

The district court and Iowa Court of Appeals both rejected it. The judge called the argument “unpersuasive and without merit,” ruling that Schreiber is either alive and must stay in prison or dead and the appeal is moot.

He remained locked up until he died of natural causes in 2023 at age 70.
