We take out mortgage protection life insurance because the bank makes us - but the reason why is so that if you die during the term of the plan, the debt is cleared and your estate (loved ones) are not left with a big debt or even worse homeless.

However: what about your other responsibilities such as dependents or loved ones that you would like to be looked after if you are not around to provide, support and nourish them. Life cover does not have to be expensive and for most you might be surprised how much cover you might get for the price of a lunch a month!

In 2022 Aviva paid out against 97% of life cover claims, €56.4m to 471 people. On the whole claims may not be paid if there was a non disclosure at the time of taking the policy out e.g. you vaped but you said you didn't.

With improved health care thankfully on average we are all living longer. However there may still be times that we are unable to work for periods due to ill health.

Income protection:
* Pays the Bills, Rent/ Mortgage,
* Allows you to still fund your pension and longer term needs,
* Allows you maintain a standard of living.
* Gives peace of mind to focus on getting well.

If you are unable to work and meet the PRSI criteria you might be eligible to claim disability benefit for 2 years but there after social welfare benefits are subject to means testing.
