Some weeks resist summary. These in Dublin were of that kind — demanding, luminous, and unexpectedly moving.

I spent them teaching a masterclass in personal and experimental filmmaking, with a group of artists drawn from Ireland and from Denmark, Romania and the United Kingdom. What passes between people in such a room is not technique; technique can be written down. It is closer to a manner of attending — to duration, to the opacity of an image, to what a frame withholds. Together we made a single film, composed by many hands, no part of it belonging to anyone alone. Authorship dissolved into the work, which may be the only honest condition for it. To have worked with them was an honour I do not hold lightly. Many thanks also to Bob Gallagher

At the Light House Cinema I presented A Decade of Cinema, a video essay assembled from ten years of looking. And to move again through Dublin’s art, film and experimental film communities — to watch, to argue, to sit late with people for whom the image is a serious matter — was a pleasure of a rarer kind.

I also spent time with my Experimental Film Society family, filmmakers beside whom I have worked for many years. Fidelity of that duration is rare, and I do not take it for granted. We parted with plans: films to be made, collaborations to be built, work that will take its own time to arrive.

I am already turning back toward Dublin.
