🔔 Today’s episode features extraordinary Dawn from Work Is Third, offering a powerful and sobering look at the long-term impact of childhood trauma and the layered realities of healing. Her openness about growing up in a military family and witnessing domestic violence brings forward essential insights for anyone seeking to better understand resilience, recovery, and the courage it takes to rewrite inherited patterns.

Here are 3 key takeaways for anyone navigating tough times or supporting others through theirs:

✅ Your Story Matters: Giving yourself permission to name your experiences is a critical first step in healing. Therapy isn’t always comfortable, but honest reflection opens the door to growth.

✅ You Don’t Have to Be Defined By Your Past: Childhood trauma can deeply impact your self-esteem, relationships, and even your drive for perfection. But as adults, we can break cycles, set boundaries, and build a life that aligns with who we truly are.

✅ Connection Heals: Whether support comes from family, friends, or even a mentor, healthy relationships are often the difference makers—they give us safety, perspective, and hope.

It’s never too late to rewrite your story. With self-compassion, help, and a willingness to sit with both the joy and the tears, transformation is possible.

If my journey resonates, I’d love to connect with others who are on their own path of healing and purpose.

Sheesh, the end-of-year exhaustion has absolutely set in for pretty much every parent I’ve spoken with this week! Hang in there. We are going to make it to that finish line together. 💪

But we both know end-of-year-itis isn’t the only thing leaving you overwhelmed 😢 - and I have something to help you out.

This podcast episode is your refreshment stand in the marathon of separated parenting—an invitation to pause, catch your breath, and refill your cup.

I recently sat down with James Lumumba on his ‘Don’t be Afraid to Talk’ Podcast to address the questions separated parents are genuinely losing sleep over.

Here are some of the nourishing bites we cover:
✨Your Kids Will Be Fine - so long as you do one critical thing.
✨Courageous Love: Why moving on from an unhealthy relationship is not failure, but instead an act of profound love.
✨Emotional First Aid: The simple self-kindness that helps parents survive those early weeks and months.
✨The Disney Parent: Why they are not a threat to your relationship with your kids—and how you can know this for sure.
✨The Power of Collaborative Practice: A non-adversarial approach with satisfaction outcomes from 75% all the way up to 100%.

Pop your headphones on, have a listen, and let me know what you found most helpful! If you’re just trying to find your balance and reduce your stress so you can be there for your kids - this will help.

Back in 2019, I messaged people and asked them to write a message of support for anyone battling mental health issues or grieving a loss. These are the messages I received — and they’re just as relevant today.

You might recognize some faces 😊 All the young teens who took part back then must be adults now… and yet, we’re still having the same conversation.

🌱 Parenting isn’t just a role—it’s a lifelong learning journey.

I recently tuned into a fantastic conversation with Luke Adsit, a peaceful parenting coach, on the “Don’t Be Afraid to Talk” podcast. Luke shared practical insights that truly resonated with me—not just as food for thought, but as actionable advice for anyone raising kids (or supporting those who do).

A major takeaway: Parenting is meant to be a team effort, not a solo marathon. We often forget that, historically, it took an entire village—extended families, communities, mentors—to raise children. In today’s fast-paced Western society, parents are often left to do the job of 20 people. No wonder we’re exhausted and searching for answers!

Luke’s philosophy centers on empathetic, non-punitive communication:
✔️ Prevention over reaction—Address challenges calmly outside the heat of the moment.
✔️ Describe, don’t evaluate—Replace negative labels with objective observations.
✔️ Model the behavior you wish to see—Kids learn so much more by watching than by being told.

Perhaps the most important reminder: Every child is unique. Our job isn’t to mold them into “mini-me’s,” but to guide, encourage, and support them as they figure out who they are.

Let’s keep challenging old paradigms and support each other as parents, professionals, and community members. It’s not just about raising kids—it’s about building a better, kinder world.

🌟 Breaking Free from Toxic Family Dynamics 🌟

Are you feeling trapped in a cycle of guilt and manipulation within your family? It's time to reclaim your power and prioritise your mental health! Here are some key steps to help you break free:

1. Set Healthy Boundaries: Understand that establishing boundaries is essential for your well-being. Remember, it's okay to prioritize yourself, even if it makes others uncomfortable.

2. Recognise Toxic Patterns: Identify behaviors that drain your energy or make you feel guilty. Acknowledge that these patterns are not your fault and that you deserve healthier relationships.

3. Surround Yourself with Support: Build a community of friends who uplift and validate you. Seek out those who understand your experiences and can reflect your worth back to you.

4. Practice Self-Forgiveness: Let go of self-blame. Understand that forgiveness is about freeing yourself from the emotional burden, not condoning the actions of others.

5. Engage in Healing Activities: Whether it's therapy, reading, or joining support groups, find ways to heal and grow. Knowledge is power, and connecting with others who share similar experiences can be transformative.

6. Take Action: Get involved in community activities, classes, or clubs. Building a support system outside of your family can provide the connection and understanding you need.

Remember, breaking free from toxic family dynamics is a journey, and it's okay to take it one step at a time. You are not alone, and you have the strength to create a healthier, happier life! 💪❤️
