The latest Annual Report of the Social Welfare Appeals Office (SWAO) has been published and includes a small number of case studies representing a sample of the appeals determined during 2024.

A publicly available online database of the SWAO, similar to those of the International Protection Appeals Tribunal and the Workplace Relations Commission, would significantly improve transparency and provide assistance in the resolution of cases and in the appeal process.

In the absence of a publicly available database, we have compiled a free-to-access database of case studies, Casebase, with information on the types of social welfare appeals made to the Social Welfare Appeals Office and their outcomes.

Check out Casebase:

The latest Annual Report of the Social Welfare Appeals Office has been published.

In 2024, the overall success rate of all appeals (including revised decisions from the Department of Social Protection and successful appeals to the Social Welfare Appeals Office) was 47.7%. Where an oral hearing took place, 62.3% had a favourable outcome.

It is important to appeal if you feel your application for a social welfare payment was wrongly refused. Sometimes, you just need to provide more information or evidence. Other times, the decision to refuse your application may have been incorrect.

We recommend that you request an in-person oral hearing to ensure that the Appeals Officer has a full appreciation of the issues before them.

Check out our FAQ guide for more information on making an appeal to the Social Welfare Appeals Office:
