Discover the Story Behind Grianán of Aileach, Donegal
Many visit Grianán of Aileach for its breathtaking 360° views but few stop to uncover its incredible story.
Perched high on Greenan Mountain this ancient stone ring fort dates back to the 6th or 7th century, once serving as the stronghold of the powerful Northern Uí Néill dynasty . From here, they ruled Inishowen, their fortress keeping watch over Lough Swilly, Lough Foyle, and beyond
In 1101, Muirchertach Ua Briain of Munster marched north and destroyed the fort in his bid to claim the High Kingship of Ireland
What you see today was rebuilt in the 19th century, when excavations revealed ancient bones, carved stones, and even what may have been a Celtic gaming board
So next time you visit, take a moment to look beyond the view — and imagine the centuries of history echoing through the stones of An Grianán Fort
