Government's Grand Plan: Log Cabins Without Planning Permission
Big news, folks—the government is cooking up a plan to let people put log cabins or modular homes in their back gardens without the usual planning permission headache. The idea? Give young adults a shot at independence without sending them straight into the jaws of the rental market.
Sounds like a win, right? But, of course, there are the usual naysayers, warning that landlords might jump on this and start charging premium money for log cabins. Still, let’s be honest—who wouldn’t take a cosy, well insulated timber cabin over a €2,000-a-month “charming” one-bed with mystery damp?
The finer details are still up in the air, but if this goes ahead, log cabins could finally be the affordable housing hack we've all been waiting for. Here’s hoping common sense wins out for once!
OUR TAKE
No planning permission doesn’t mean a free-for-all. Log cabins will still have to meet strict building control regulations to ensure they’re safe, warm, and built to last—and that’s exactly how it should be! If a log cabin provider can’t meet these standards, they shouldn’t be selling residential log cabins in the first place.
At the end of the day, these regulations exist to protect you and your family. So before you buy, do your homework—ask your provider if they’ve built log cabins with full planning permission before, or check with an architect. A proper log home should be more than just a pretty shed!
