Visit Waterford has an intriguing feature on its new website, a little button inviting you to ‘ask our digital concierge’. It's not a chatbot. Eight local volunteers man the “human-backed” service.

“It’s like a little WhatsApp chat with your friends,” says Jessica Manning, one of the volunteers. “It’s very personal. I’m just loving helping people uncover little hidden treasures.”

“Neither of us look like cyclists, but we still cycle some considerable distances," say Mark and Ellie from Co Waterford.

They're not joking. The pair are cycling the trip of a lifetime around the world, inspired by the late Waterford author, Dervla Murphy. They set off from the Prom in Tramore, Waterford in February and began cycling east through Europe. Six months later, having cycled more than 10,000 kilometres, they crossed the border into China. A new national park for Ireland? "It might not be the Alps,” says Barbara-Anne Murphy, “but it’s a very pleasant, pretty place to go for a walk.”

The Blackstairs Mountains straddle counties Wexford and Carlow and, according to the local councillor, are woefully underutilised. They could even become a new national park, she says.

Irish mums share their solo-parent holiday tips: ‘Don’t try to copy a two-parent holiday; keep things simple, and let the kids help plan... in an age-appropriate way, of course'.

Travelling as a solo parent can be tough, says Yvonne Reddin, but it can also provide amazing adventures and memories. She speaks to four solo parents about their experiences and tips, and you can read the full feature now on independent.ie/travel.

'Don’t try to copy a two-parent holiday,' as one mum says. 'Keep things simple, bring support if you can and accept there’s rarely real downtime when you’re solo parenting on a trip.'

Aer Lingus does not accept the Irish passport card or EU national identity cards as travel documents for online check in, but now aims to do so by the end of 2025, the airline says.

The cards are widely accepted throughout Europe, and Ryanair allows Irish citizens to check in online using passport cards for travel within the EU, the EEA, Albania, Bosnia, Montenegro and the UK.

"Aer Lingus is working on a solution," it says. “This is expected to be enabled by the end of this year.”

Ireland's newest five-star teed off with a ringing endorsement from Rory McIlroy, who posted recently about the “world-class hospitality” he enjoyed at Dunluce Lodge, Co Antrim.

This is an all-suite stay with a small spa (and talk of a Michelin star), writes Pól Ó Conghaile in his hotel review, and it overlooks the fourth fairway at Royal Portrush. 'But it’s still bedding in...'

Irish holidaymakers are sticking with summer breaks abroad despite record-breaking temperatures. Travel agents say they have seen little drop in demand and few cancellations to places like the Algarve, where temperatures could soon shoot into the mid-30s, or the south of France, which is topping 40C.

“The high temperatures may feature in some people’s thought processes, but for now we aren’t seeing any change in plans," says one. "The heatwave doesn’t seem to be having any impact. I’m not seeing it as a deterrent, and it’s families that are still travelling."

Where do you stand on red-eye flights? Are you the kind of person who will happily save a few euro and get up early for more time on holidays, or who will avoid a 3am alarm at all costs?

'Staggering off the plane, like groggy subjects of a science experiment, we are blinded by the light, but reanimated by the warm air,' writes Pól Ó Conghaile. 'The mood is changing; zombies are morphing into holidaying humans... here we are, on holidays, by a pool, with a blue sky over our heads and a sea winking in the near distance, before lunchtime. That is the agony, and the ecstasy.'

Sam and Nicola met on their first day of secondary school and, since then, they've seen each other at their best and worst. But the moment that really cemented their friendship was the trip they took across America, the summer they turned 18.

This year, they both turned 40. The only way to mark the occasion? By recreating that trip. Only this time, they were going to do it in style.

'We decided the train was the perfect upgrade. Amtrak’s California Zephyr covers 2,438 miles in three days and two nights, starting in Chicago, weaving through the Rocky Mountains and the red rocks of Utah, before ending up in San Francisco, where we finished up our trip back in 2003,' writes.

You can read her full story on independent.ie/travel.

'We ate cheese toasties with Carla and Dave, Minnesotans on a cross-country trip with their friends, and had dinner with Bill and Barb, a couple who met 25 years ago at the very dawn of internet dating. Every person fell into a category I adore – those who share every detail about their lives instantly and without prompt.'

'We heard tales of sickness and tragedy, family fallouts and scandalous gossip. And everyone we spoke to loved our tale – though my favourite response came from Shera, our cabin attendant, who screamed that we couldn’t possibly be 40, that she assumed we were fresh out of college. The fact that you tip your attendants clearly had nothing to do with it.'

Reflecting on their friendship through the years when they reached the end of their trip, Nicola said 'San Francisco has changed, America has changed, and we have changed, too. But while all that can be true, a lot can stay the same.'

'We may be different people now. We may live in different countries, say ‘oof’ when we stand up (or sit down), and I may have frown lines so deep you could pitch a tent in them. But nearly 30 years in, this friendship still holds – effortlessly, joyfully and with the kind of closeness that not even 55 hours in a roomette can rattle...'

'Our neighbours in Dublin went to Australia, but this year my family and I went just 30 minutes up the road for a three-day holiday in Kildare,' writes Barry Egan. 'There, we found everything we needed for an exotic break on our own doorstep...'

Christy Moore was on to something with his song Lisdoonvarna.
