Officials linked to the Trump administration were reportedly involved in three meetings since April 2025 with a group advocating for the secession of Alberta from Canada, according to CNN. The group allegedly requested USD 500 billion in financial support to finance the process of separating Alberta from Canada, with the stated goal of achieving independence and forming a new sovereign state. Ultimately, the United States is said to expect that Alberta would come under U.S. administrative influence.
The report identified the group as the Alberta Prosperity Project, an initiative that has triggered strong backlash from the Canadian government. Canada’s Prime Minister, Mark Carney, has publicly urged President Donald Trump to respect Canada’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, warning against any form of interference in Canada’s internal affairs.
Background on Alberta
Alberta is a western Canadian province and one of the country’s most energy-rich regions. It is often described as Canada’s energy hub, as oil production from its oil sands accounts for approximately 84% of Canada’s total crude oil output. In terms of geographic size, Alberta is roughly comparable to the U.S. state of Texas.
The province has a population of around 5 million people and is home to the Rocky Mountains, along with globally renowned tourist destinations such as Banff National Park and Lake Louise. Economically, energetically, and politically, Alberta holds significant weight, making it a key pillar of Canada’s national stability.
Despite this, analysts argue that the Trump-linked outreach appears to treat Alberta primarily as a strategic pressure point against the Canadian government. Any attempt by Alberta to secede from Canada under current conditions is widely considered impractical and highly unlikely.
