A Lasting Tribute to Liam Reilly Unveiled on Earl Street
A special ceremony took place in Dundalk this morning to honour the late Liam Reilly, beloved frontman of Bagatelle, with the unveiling of a commemorative bench on Earl Street. The tribute marks the enduring legacy of one of Ireland’s most cherished songwriters and proudly celebrates his deep connection to the town where his musical journey began.
Proceedings began in the Town Hall, where Sean Kelly, Cathaoirleach of Louth County Council, led the tributes alongside Liam’s sister, Barbara. Both speakers reflected warmly on Liam’s childhood in Fatima and the creative spirit that ran through the Reilly household. Sean Kelly spoke of Liam’s contribution to Irish music and cultural identity, while Barbara’s memories offered a touching glimpse into the family life that shaped her brother’s words and melodies.
Following the speeches, crowds made their way to Earl Street, where over 200 people gathered in the rain to witness the unveiling. The bench itself holds special significance, it was the final commissioned piece by local artist Michael McKeown, whose detailed craftsmanship has left its mark across the town. McKeown’s work captures not just Liam’s likeness, but his warmth and connection to Dundalk’s people.
Also in attendance was Ken Doyle, co-founder of Bagatelle and Liam’s long-time bandmate, whose presence reminded many of the shared journey that began decades ago and produced some of Ireland’s best-loved songs. Together, Reilly and Doyle helped etch Bagatelle’s music into the nation’s memory, their songs becoming a soundtrack to Irish life at home and abroad.
As the ceremony concluded, many lingered by the new memorial, a simple but deeply meaningful tribute. For Dundalk, the bench represents more than a remembrance; it stands as a place of gathering, reflection, and pride.
