A childhood friend holds a special place in our hearts. Those friendships matter, and the loss of a familiar face from the classroom is carried by young hearts too.

Seven years after Ugne passed away in 2019, her mum, Rita Kuliauskaite-Mokejeviene, has chosen to share their family’s story in her own words:

“I have thought for a long time about whether to share our story but I wanted to express our gratitude to St. Mary’s Trim.

“My first two daughters attended this school, and my third daughter started there a year ago. But this short story is about my second daughter, Ugne.

“I would like to express my deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to all the staff at St. Mary’s Trim for the incredible support we received throughout Ugne’s journey - when she was undergoing treatment, when we had to share the heartbreaking news that, sadly, her life was limited, and finally when she passed away.

“We always felt your support, kindness and compassion, and we still feel it even now, several years later.

“Thank you from the bottom of our hearts.”

Seven years may have passed, but today Rita and her family are not only remembering the little girl Ugne was. They are missing the 16-year-old she should be today.

There should have been 16 candles today. Today, Ugne would have celebrated her 16th birthday.
