One cottage. Five generations. One mother’s unbreakable will to survive.

This is the real story of how one Irish family crossed oceans, faced heartbreak, and still found their way home.

In 1870, newlyweds Mary and John left rural Ireland for a fresh start in New York. They settled quickly, loved the energy of the city, and started a family. But Mary never shook the deep homesickness, and soon they returned to Tyrone with their two children, investing everything into a local hotel.

Sadly, post-Famine hardship had hollowed the town. The business failed, the marriage crumbled, and Mary was forced to return to New York alone — determined to provide for her children.

She found work, sent money home, and her father saved every penny. After 7 long years, he bought a cottage with a pig crawl, stables, and room to grow. Mary returned to Ireland for good, children in tow.

Life seemed to settle — until tragedy struck and her eldest son died in a field accident. Her daughter Aideen became a nurse, married Danny, and raised three sons in that very cottage.

Mary passed in 1937, leaving the home to Aideen and Danny. Aideen passed peacefully in 1986, leaving it to their eldest son Peter, who raised his own family on the land.

Today, that original cottage still stands — cared for by Peter’s daughters, who proudly preserve a story of resilience, love, and legacy spanning five generations. 🏡❤️

Belfast, our Bank of Ireland building is more than history, it's full of surprises! Mon see 👀

The iconic Art Deco Bank of Ireland building in Belfast has always held stories within its walls, but now it’s home to something pretty special on floor two that genuinely caught me off guard. Have a watch of the looksy and see it for yourself.

I absolutely love what Belfast Stories are doing here. We need more people with this kind of vision and passion helping give historic buildings a future and showing that preserving our heritage can bring these incredible spaces back to life.

What an incredible day exploring the hidden stories of Belfast 👀

A huge thank you to everyone who joined us today as we stepped inside the historic Bank of Ireland building and wandered the streets of Belfast, uncovering the abandoned spaces, forgotten places, and layers of history that so many pass by every day without noticing.

It was brilliant sharing conversations about Belfast’s lost architecture, untold stories, and the traces of the past still standing quietly around us.

A special thank you to Belfast Stories for being part of today, and to the amazing Belfast Photo Festival for continuing to create opportunities like this through so many fantastic events happening across the city.

If you joined us today, have a look through the photos and tag yourself!

Belfast has so many stories still waiting to be seen, today was just one chapter!

Abandoned Church - Purdysburn, Belfast.

In an era before modern approaches to mental health care, religion played a significant role in daily life. Services, prayers, and religious observances were often woven into the weekly routine for both patients and staff. For many, the church offered a sense of familiarity, comfort, and connection during difficult periods of their lives.

Behind these walls are stories that should never be forgotten.

I never celebrate the abandonment of any building.

These photographs, taken across a number of Ireland's abandoned asylums, capture buildings that witnessed some of the darkest chapters in our social history. Behind the grand facades were countless individuals who, in many cases, endured isolation, harsh treatment, and conditions that would be unthinkable today.

While these structures now stand empty, they serve as powerful reminders of the people who passed through their doors and the lessons that history has taught us. Their stories deserve to be remembered, not hidden away.

This collection is not about the decay of the buildings themselves, but about preserving the memory of those whose voices were often never heard.

What are your thoughts when you see places like these?

Did your family work at the Strand Spinning Mill in East Belfast? 🧵

I'm researching the history of the Strand Spinning Mill and would love to hear from people in East Belfast and the surrounding areas whose relatives worked there.

Were there stories passed down through your family? Do you have memories, photographs, documents, or tales about life in the mill, the people who worked there, or the local community that grew around it?

Every story, no matter how small, helps build a picture of the lives, friendships, and experiences connected to this important part of Belfast's industrial heritage.

If you have a connection to the Strand Spinning Mill, (Now Portview Trade Centre) please leave a comment or send me a message. I'd be delighted to hear from you 💕
