University of Galway is leading three new major EU-funded projects to improve medical devices, brain treatments, and inclusive medical trials.

The awards were made by the European’s Commission’s Marie Sklodowska Curie Actions-Doctoral network programme (MSCA DN), as part of Horizon Europe 2020.

A project titled DECADOCS - Decadent Travellers and the Reception of Classical Antiquity - is in partnership with Goldsmiths, University of London and the CĂșirt International Festival of Literature. DECADOCS is the first doctoral network dedicated to the study of decadence, the disruptive societal phenomenon traditionally associated with accelerated decline and decay.

Involving Dr Muireann O’Cinneide, a researcher in English, Media and Creative Arts, this part of the network will explore late nineteenth-century travel and mobility as producing radical explorations of counter-cultural sexualities and complex imperial identities.

đŸ“ș TG4 is to screen a ground-breaking mini-series exploring Gaelic games on film since the beginning of the 20th century.

IomĂĄnaĂocht Hollywood: CluichĂ Gaelacha ar ScannĂĄn / Hollywood Hurling: Gaelic Games on Film is a two-part programme offering a unique insight into how Ireland, Irish people and our national sports have been depicted in cinema, including in productions from major Hollywood studios and directors such as seminal Oscar-winning Irish-American director John Ford.

An LMDÓC Production for TG4 funded by CoimisiĂșn na MeĂĄn, the series is based on the acclaimed book Gaelic Games on Film: From silent films to Hollywood hurling, horror and the emergence of Irish cinema (Cork University Press, 2019) by University of Galway academic SeĂĄn Crosson, who also wrote and is associate producer of the series.

The programme also traces the central role of Gaelic games in the emergence of an indigenous Irish film culture in the second half of the 20th century.

Episode 1 from the series is to be broadcast this Thursday, September 4th at 9.30pm (with repeats on Sept 5th and 7th).
Episode 2 will be broadcast on Thursday, September 11th at 9.30pm (with repeats on the 12th and 14th).

👏 Congratulations to Dr Amanda Feery on her new album!

NEST is a sibling piece to a vocal quintet composed by Dr Amanda Feery as part of Eimear Walshe’s 2024 Venice Art Biennale installation, Romantic Ireland. Composed for vocal quintet, organ, and electronics, NEST is a Mass for the Tenant. It is not a Mass in the traditional sense, but I see the piece as a vigil for the tenants of the past and the present. The piece is a critical response to the theme of home in Éamon de Valera's 1943 radio address, 'On Language and the Irish Nation'. With a libretto by Eimear Walshe, the line, 'they come to make a ruin', repeats throughout the piece like a congregational response.
