Baz Luhrmann is turning up the volume on Elvis Presley’s story once again. The director behind Elvis is back at The Toronto Film Festival taking an even deeper dive into the life and music of the King of Rock and Roll with ‘EPiC: Elvis Presley in Concert’ featuring unreleased footage of Elvis talking about his life and his music. We’ll look back at three of the directors' films today, Elvis, Moulin Rouge and Romeo and Juliet. Plus, with the release of Downton Abbey : The Grand Finale, we’ll dip into the soundtracks of Gosford Park and The Remains of the day, and a birthday nod to Sam Neil, with music from The Piano and Jurassic Park. Ahead of his 80th Birthday tomorrow, a birthday salute to violinist Itzhak Perlman, we’ll hear him as soloist on three John Williams scores, Schindler’s list, Sabrina & Far and Away. Speaking of John Williams, we'll take a first listen to the brand new fullly remastered Jaws soundtrack, including music you have never heard before! We’ll treat ourselves to the final moments of Casablanca and take ourselves to Spain with the music of Alberto Iglesias from the Pedro Almodovar film Parallel Mothers starring Penélope Cruz. A birthday salute to French composer Alexandre Desplat, one of the busiest and most versatile film score composers out there with over one hundred soundtracks to his name. Gene Kelly was born on this day in 1912, we’ll remember his great performances in Singin’ in the Rain, Brigadoon and An American in Paris. Included on the music menu this Saturday afternoon, I mark the 50th Birthday of the landmark musical A Chorus Line, featuring music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. A Chorus Line transports audiences to auditions for the dance ensemble of a Broadway musical. The group of stage hopefuls share with us their dreams and aspirations.
This musical introduced such favorites as One, What I Did for Love, I hope I get it, and At the Ballet. Nominated for 12 Tony Awards, it won nine and also won the 1976 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. Talk to you 1-4pm on RTE lyric fm
