Irish holidaymakers are sticking with summer breaks abroad despite record-breaking temperatures. Travel agents say they have seen little drop in demand and few cancellations to places like the Algarve, where temperatures could soon shoot into the mid-30s, or the south of France, which is topping 40C.

“The high temperatures may feature in some people’s thought processes, but for now we aren’t seeing any change in plans," says one. "The heatwave doesn’t seem to be having any impact. I’m not seeing it as a deterrent, and it’s families that are still travelling."

Where do you stand on red-eye flights? Are you the kind of person who will happily save a few euro and get up early for more time on holidays, or who will avoid a 3am alarm at all costs?

'Staggering off the plane, like groggy subjects of a science experiment, we are blinded by the light, but reanimated by the warm air,' writes Pól Ó Conghaile. 'The mood is changing; zombies are morphing into holidaying humans... here we are, on holidays, by a pool, with a blue sky over our heads and a sea winking in the near distance, before lunchtime. That is the agony, and the ecstasy.'

Sam and Nicola met on their first day of secondary school and, since then, they've seen each other at their best and worst. But the moment that really cemented their friendship was the trip they took across America, the summer they turned 18.

This year, they both turned 40. The only way to mark the occasion? By recreating that trip. Only this time, they were going to do it in style.

'We decided the train was the perfect upgrade. Amtrak’s California Zephyr covers 2,438 miles in three days and two nights, starting in Chicago, weaving through the Rocky Mountains and the red rocks of Utah, before ending up in San Francisco, where we finished up our trip back in 2003,' writes.

'We ate cheese toasties with Carla and Dave, Minnesotans on a cross-country trip with their friends, and had dinner with Bill and Barb, a couple who met 25 years ago at the very dawn of internet dating. Every person fell into a category I adore – those who share every detail about their lives instantly and without prompt.'

'We heard tales of sickness and tragedy, family fallouts and scandalous gossip. And everyone we spoke to loved our tale – though my favourite response came from Shera, our cabin attendant, who screamed that we couldn’t possibly be 40, that she assumed we were fresh out of college. The fact that you tip your attendants clearly had nothing to do with it.'

Reflecting on their friendship through the years when they reached the end of their trip, Nicola said 'San Francisco has changed, America has changed, and we have changed, too. But while all that can be true, a lot can stay the same.'

'We may be different people now. We may live in different countries, say ‘oof’ when we stand up (or sit down), and I may have frown lines so deep you could pitch a tent in them. But nearly 30 years in, this friendship still holds – effortlessly, joyfully and with the kind of closeness that not even 55 hours in a roomette can rattle...'

'Our neighbours in Dublin went to Australia, but this year my family and I went just 30 minutes up the road for a three-day holiday in Kildare,' writes Barry Egan. 'There, we found everything we needed for an exotic break on our own doorstep...'

‘It’s basically a bumper boat on the water’, writes one Irish mum about her decision to take a family of five (and their dog) on a Shannon cruise holiday.

'The idea of cramming my family of five and the dog into close quarters for a week, in the rain, had me questioning my travel planning skills, especially since the idea hadn’t been met with raised-arm enthusiasm,' says Orla Neligan.

'But the very genial staff at Emerald Star bolstered us for our journey ahead with charm and good humour, despite the biblical rain outside. “It’ll be cosy, and you can always just dock for the night if you’d prefer,” they reassured us.'

'It can be tempting to throw yourself outside your comfort zone all at once, but doing things alone — solo travelling, or even just going out to dinner or the movies by yourself — can feel intimidating at first,' writes one of the authors of Lonely Planet's new book, 'Women Travel Solo'.

'But it’s a muscle you build up over time. Start with a day trip or an afternoon wandering a museum you have always wanted to see but didn’t know who to go with.

'When I backpacked through Australia and New Zealand/Aotearoa, I tacked on extra days at the end of group tours so I had solo time to explore (and decompress) after non-stop socialising and being ‘on’. I’d already acclimatised to the new-to-me destination while travelling with the group, which meant I had more confidence and knowledge to navigate the streets on my own.'

“Vancouver has been good to us," says Laura Donnellan, who moved with husband William and their sons from Co Galway to Vancouver. "The mountains, the sea, and the abundance of parks give the boys opportunities to try incredible things.

“On a Tuesday evening after school in the middle of winter, they can ski or play hockey and in the summer, they’re sailing or attending outdoor preschool. The emphasis on outdoor living is wonderful and the schools are excellent, which helped ease the transition.”

The Donnellans are among an estimated 10,000 Irish living in the coastal city, and several spoke to the Irish Independent to share insights into their new lives in Canada. Read the full story here: https://bit.ly/3Ul6Cuu

Lourdes is one of the world’s most popular pilgrimage destinations. Paul Dunny writes about an unforgettable trip with his son Tim, who has Down syndrome, and explains why the French town offers a more varied experience than you may think...

Tim was invited to travel to Lourdes by the Curragh Lourdes Fund, and Paul went along as his carer. Every two years, after lots of fundraising, the Co Kildare-based group brings children who have been ill or have special needs to Lourdes as part of the annual Defence Forces Military Pilgrimage.

The Di**le Skellig Hotel has been on the go for almost 60 years, and is part of the furniture in the Kerry hospitality scene. Di**le itself is changing, however, so how does the four-star fit in now?

The Di**le Skellig Hotel has been on the go for almost 60 years, and is well and truly part of the furniture in the Kerry hospitality scene. It has changed over the years, of course – the most notable recent news was the launch of the owners’ new townhouse property, Base Di**le, aimed at the mor...

Looking for a Spanish city break without the crowds? An hour’s drive south of Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz is a mix of medieval and modern, easily walkable and surrounded by a 33km green belt that includes the Salburua Park on the eastern outskirts... you can travel to Bilbao by ferry from Ireland, too.

“I bet you all a pint you can’t name the capital of the Spanish Basque Country,” I said to the lads in Ryan’s. Gerry had a guess at Bilbao. Terry thought it was San Sebastian. Liam pitched in with Pamplona.
