Is this really a children’s story?

I never know how to answer.

Because children read it differently.
Adults read it differently.
And sometimes — the same person reads it differently every year.

So I usually say:

It’s a story about food.
And about what people become when they don’t have enough of it.

There was a cat — Virgil — who had lived through things no cat should ever have to endure.

And there was a rat — George — who claimed he was from London.

He was born in a dumpster outside a restaurant.
Later, he ended up inside a box of macaroni.
The box was loaded onto a steamer.
And the steamer went to sea.
