What is the story of this important magazine? Originally, its forerunner The Israel Dance Annual, appeared in 1975. It was the co-creation of Giora Manor and Judith Brin Ingber, appearing yearly in both English and Hebrew. Richly illustrated, it featured the dance premiers each year of Israel’s main dance companies. In 1975 these included the Bat Dor Dance Company; Batsheva Dance Company; Inbal Dance Theatre; The Israel Classical Ballet; Kol Ve Demama and the Efrati Dance Co.; the Kibbutz Dance Company as well as others including the visiting Royal Winnipeg Ballet and soloists Ze’eva Cohen; Zilvia Duran; and Rachel Kafri. Articles and reviews were included in each publication.
The Annual was followed by the ‘Israel Dance Quarterly’ edited by Ruth Eshel, with Manor. Since 2000, Eshel has been solo creator and editor of Mahol Akhshav.
Giora Manor’s yahrzeit was yesterday. Born March 28, 1926 in Prague, he was a Zionist from a young age. At 13, he decided to travel to Kibbutz Mishmar HaEmek with his uncle, one of the kibbutz founders, leaving his large family whom he never saw again. None but he and his uncle survived the Holocaust. He was a member of the kibbutz until his death on March 28, 2005. Manor was a noted theatre director in Tel Aviv, also a theatre critic and then writer and editor. He was a prolific dance writer, publishing articles in German, English, Hebrew and his native Czech. He presented at international dance conferences and wrote 8 books; he especially emphasized acclaimed artists Baruch Agadati, Gertrud Kraus and Sara Levi-Tanai whose works were increasingly forgotten by younger generations.
