Government to read your WhatsApp Messages?
From April 1, 2026, the new Income Tax Act will officially allow digital evidence to be used in tax investigations. This means WhatsApp chats, Instagram posts, emails, websites, cloud servers, apps and even Google Maps can all be examined.
But this does not mean random snooping. It applies only during authorised income tax raids, and usually when a person is not cooperating with the authorities.
Why was this change needed? The old Income Tax Act, 1961, only mentioned physical evidence like documents, books of accounts, lockers and safes. Digital evidence was not specifically listed, so people under investigation and even courts could question its use. The new law removes this loophole.
The Finance Minister even gave examples: WhatsApp chats exposed a ₹200 crore bogus billing scam, Instagram helped trace benami luxury vehicles, and Google Maps led investigators to hidden cash. In short, what was already happening will now be backed by law.
The opposition, however, has raised concerns. Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate and DMK MP Kalanidhi Veeraswamy have questioned if this step threatens people’s privacy.
So is this a necessary reform for the digital age, or a risk to your personal privacy?
