Religious conversion that targets or coerces people is wrong and must stop. Illegal or forced conversions should be investigated and dealt with under the law. Tripura and India must protect citizens’ freedom of faith while ensuring no community is harassed or tempted through coercion. We demand fair enforcement of existing laws and peaceful communal harmony for all.

In 1838, Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya formally shifted the capital of Tripura from Udaipur (Old Rangamati) to Agartala.

Later, Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya (1896–1909) and Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya (1909–1923) developed Agartala into a modern town.

The most famous ruler, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya (1923–1947), is called the architect of modern Tripura. He built roads, schools, and the Ujjayanta Palace, which served as the royal residence.

The area of present-day Agartala was once part of the Kingdom of Tripura, ruled by the Manikya dynasty for several centuries.

The word Agartala comes from two words: Agar (a valuable oily tree, Aquilaria malaccensis, used for perfumes and incense) + Tala (storehouse/base). Thus, “Agartala” means “a storehouse of Agarwood.”
