In 1838, Maharaja Krishna Kishore Manikya formally shifted the capital of Tripura from Udaipur (Old Rangamati) to Agartala.
Later, Maharaja Radha Kishore Manikya (1896–1909) and Maharaja Birendra Kishore Manikya (1909–1923) developed Agartala into a modern town.
The most famous ruler, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya (1923–1947), is called the architect of modern Tripura. He built roads, schools, and the Ujjayanta Palace, which served as the royal residence.
The area of present-day Agartala was once part of the Kingdom of Tripura, ruled by the Manikya dynasty for several centuries.
The word Agartala comes from two words: Agar (a valuable oily tree, Aquilaria malaccensis, used for perfumes and incense) + Tala (storehouse/base). Thus, “Agartala” means “a storehouse of Agarwood.”

Integration with India
After the death of Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya in 1947, the state was ruled by Maharani Kanchan Prava Devi as regent.
In October 1949, Tripura was officially merged with the Indian Union, and Agartala became the capital of the Union Territory of Tripura.
In 1972, Tripura achieved full statehood, with Agartala as its permanent capital.
Today, Agartala is the largest city of Tripura and the second-largest city in Northeast India after Guwahati.
It is known for its Ujjayanta Palace, Neermahal, Jagannath Temple, Tripura Sundari Temple, and rich cultural heritage blending indigenous Tripuri traditions.
It has also grown as a center of education, trade, and governance, with improved connectivity via rail, air, and road.
