Police detained Tripura Public Service Commission (TPSC) Chairman Retired Colonel Kush Kumar Sharma late Sunday night following a heated altercation at a city hotel hosting the 2nd Tripura Prabashi Summit.

According to police officials, Sharma was allegedly in an inebriated state and created a disturbance inside the hotel premises. His son was also involved in the incident. Police accused both of obstructing official duties and causing a commotion.

Authorities released Sharma early Monday morning on a personal bond after a medical examination.

Assam Rifles and the Customs Department busted a major cigarette smuggling attempt during a joint operation in Teliamura on Monday.

The security forces launched the operation at 9:15 a.m. in the Chakmaghat area after receiving specific intelligence inputs from internal sources and 11 WEU. Acting promptly, the team increased surveillance and set up vehicle checks along the suspected route.

During the operation, personnel intercepted a Tata truck (TR-01-AP-1717) and conducted a detailed search. The inspection led to the recovery of 6.5 lakh contraband cigarettes packed in 65 cartons.

Officials estimated the international market value of the seized cigarettes at around ₹65 lakh.
