Public transport unions oppose mandatory Mizotaxi app, urge member boycott

, JUNE 1:
Three public transport associations on Monday jointly opposed the Mizoram government’s move to make the new 'MizoTaxi' mobile application mandatory for passenger transport operators.

The Mizoram Taxi Association (MTA), Aizawl Two Wheeler Taxi Association (ATTA), and Aizawl District Auto-Rickshaw Owners Association (ADAROA) issued a joint statement following a Saturday meeting, expressing sharp dissatisfaction with the directive.
The groups appealed to the relevant authorities to withdraw the decision immediately and issued a strict advisory urging members to refrain from downloading or registering on the platform.

Vehicle operators vehemently oppose the mandate, citing the financial burden of annual registration fees just to maintain operations.

According to a May 29 official release by the State Transport Authority (STA) Secretary, the app is designed to help passengers verify and pay government-approved fares.
The STA directed all four-wheel taxis, two-wheel taxis, and auto-rickshaws in the capital to register at the Chaltlang Transport Complex during June ahead of a July 1 rollout.

Operators registering in June face a concessional fee of Rs. 600 per year, while late registrants will be charged Rs. 1,000 annually.

MSU alleges BSF recruitment fraud, urges Home Minister to expedite action

, JUNE 1:

The Mizo Students' Union (MSU), an influential student organisation in Mizoram, on Monday urged the state government to expedite action on alleged large-scale irregularities in recent Border Security Force (BSF) recruitment, claiming that non-residents had secured jobs under the Mizo quota using forged documents.

An MSU delegation met Home Minister K. Sapdanga at his office in Aizawl to discuss the First Information Report (FIR) the union filed with the Aizawl Police Station on March 6.
The FIR alleged that several individuals who were not residents of Mizoram falsely claimed Mizo residency to secure BSF employment using forged documents.

The Union leaders expressed deep concern that nearly three months after the complaint was lodged, no visible action has been taken.
They urged the Home Minister to intensify the investigation and bring those responsible to justice without further delay.

Responding to these concerns, Sapdanga acknowledged the seriousness of the allegations and assured the delegation that any wrongdoing would be dealt with firmly.
He stated that the government would work closely with the MSU and make every effort to address the recruitment irregularities.

Drugs worth Rs. 6.7 cr seized, three Assam men arrested

| JUNE 1:
Mizoram police have intercepted a major narcotics shipment on the Mizoram-Manipur highway, seizing morphine and he**in worth a combined Rs 6.7 crore and arresting three suspects, police said in a statement on Monday.

Acting on intelligence regarding suspicious vehicular movement, a special team from the Saitual District Executive Force (DEF) intercepted an Assam-registered Ashok Leyland truck traveling from Manipur toward Aizawl on Sunday.

A thorough search of the vehicle uncovered 13 packets of suspected morphine weighing 6.683 kg, hidden inside a specially fabricated compartment next to the driver's seat, the statement said.
Officials valued the seized morphine at over Rs 6.68 crore. Police also recovered 12 grams of he**in, worth an estimated Rs 2.4 lakh, from the same truck.

According to a police statement, the three arrested individuals have been identified as Raju Giri (32), Karnamani Das (26), and Ganesh Das (40), all residents of Assam.

Investigators seized three mobile phones from the suspects.

A formal case has been registered under relevant provisions of the law as the investigation continues, the statement added.

43 HPC(D) cadres to lay down arms; CM Lalduhoma to attend ceremony

| APR 29:

At least 43 members of the Lalhmingthanga Sanate-led faction of the Hmar People’s Convention (Democratic) or HPC(D) are set to lay down arms and return to mainstream life during a homecoming ceremony on Thursday, marking a significant step toward lasting peace in Mizoram.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Home Minister K. Sapdanga will grace the event, scheduled to be held at the police Central Training Institute in Sesawng, around 40 km from Aizawl.
Several ministers and MLAs are also expected to attend.

The development follows a peace accord signed between the Mizoram government and the group on April 14, effectively bringing an end to insurgent activity in what is already regarded as one of India’s most peaceful states.

Though largely dormant in recent years, the Sanate-led faction of HPC(D) was considered the last ethnic insurgent group in the state, occasionally involved in sporadic criminal activities.

The bilateral agreement, signed at Sakawrdai in Aizawl district, the headquarters of the Sinlung Hills Council (SHC), centred on a comprehensive development roadmap for the Hmar-dominated SHC region. Key provisions include enhanced budgetary allocation for the council, a special development package, infrastructure improvements, better connectivity and recognition of Hmar festival 'Sikpui Ruoi'.

Mizoram records highest Class 12 pass rate since 2022 at 87.67%

| APR 29: Mizoram has recorded its highest Class 12 pass percentage since 2022, with 87.67 per cent of students clearing the board examinations declared on Wednesday.

According to the Mizoram Board of School Education, a total of 10,734 students passed out of 12,243 candidates who appeared for the examinations held between February and March.
1,394 students failed, and 115 have been placed in the compartment category.

In a closely contested outcome, male candidates marginally outperformed female students.
Boys registered a pass rate of 87.7 per cent, while girls followed closely at 87.66 per cent across Arts, Science, and Commerce streams.

Commerce emerged as the best-performing discipline with a 90.51 per cent pass rate among 759 candidates.
Science recorded an 89.24 per cent success rate out of 2,770 students, while Arts, the largest stream with 8,714 candidates, posted an 86.93 per cent pass rate.

As regard institutional performance, deficit schools, which receive government grants, maintained a top performers with an average pass rate of 93.80 per cent across all streams.
Purely private schools followed at 91.55 per cent, while government-run institutions recorded an 83.13 per cent success rate.
In 2021, Mizoram recorded 87.80 per cent success rate in class-12 examinations, the highest in recent six years.

MBSE to declare class-10 results on April 23

| APRIL 21:
The Mizoram Board of School Education (MBSE) is set to announce the results of Hing School Leaving Certificate (HSLC) examination on April 23 at 12:00 noon.

Students will be able to check their results at the MBSE office in Chaltlang and the regional office in Lunglei.
The results will also be available online on the official websites — www.mbse.edu.in and www.mbseonline.com
In addition, printed result booklets will be made available for those who require physical copies.

The board has also informed that results can be accessed during office hours through designated phone numbers-

Voting under way for AMC, Lalduhoma confident of clean sweep

|APR 21:
Polling for the 19-member Aizawl Municipal Corporation (AMC) is underway under tight security, with the State Election Commission reporting a 25.14 percent voter turnout among 2.39 lakh voters by 12 noon.
A total of 68 candidates, including 28 women, are contesting the civic polls, with the Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), Mizo National Front (MNF), and Congress fielding 19 each, and the BJP fielding 11.
Counting is scheduled for April 27.

Chief Minister Lalduhoma expressed optimism that the ZPM will secure a clear mandate winning 16 or the entire seats.
Speaking to reporters after casting his ballot at Chawlhhmun, Lalduhoma promised transparency and faster development for Aizawl if the party is voted to power.
He said that the recent political backlashes targeted at the ZPM would only strengthen the party's position.

Meanwhile, the opposition Mizo National Front (MNF) is seeking a "hat-trick" after winning the 2015 and 2021 polls.
Casting his vote at Ramhlun Venglai, MNF president Zoramthanga cited his party’s track record of "good governance" during the AMC two term as the key to victory.
The former Chief Minister also countered Lalduhoma's optimism, claiming the public is losing faith in the ZPM administration.
He alleged that the current state government has already faced severe criticism from the people, including the government employees and the poor.
He further asserted that the MNF has fielded superior candidates compared to its rivals. (Hills Gazette)

Mizoram inks peace pact with Sanate-led HPC(D) faction, Sikpui Ruoi to get official recognition

|APR 14:
The Mizoram government on Tuesday signed a historic peace accord with the Lalhmingthanga Sanate-led faction of the Hmar People's Convention (Democratic), or HPC(D).
The agreement effectively marked a total end to insurgency within the state.

The bilateral agreement focuses on a comprehensive development agenda for the Hmar-dominated Sinlung Hills Council (SHC) region. Key provisions include an increase in the council's budgetary allocation, a special development package, infrastructure upgrades, and enhanced connectivity. The pact also secures the establishment of residential schools and hostels, along with official recognition for key Hmar festival (Sikpui Ruoi) and Hmar Martyrs' Day.

The Memorandum of Settlement (MoS) was singed by Mizoram home secretary David Lalthantluanga, representing the state government, and HPC(D) president Sanate on the group's behalf during a ceremony held at Sakawrdai, which also serves as the headquarters of SHC.
The signing was witnessed by Lalmuanpuia Punte, MLA and Adviser to the Chief Minister (Political), along with senior officials and leaders of the Hmar community.

Under the accord, cadres of the Sanate-led faction will lay down their arms and transition to mainstream society.
"The Government of Mizoram shall make utmost efforts to honor and implement the charter of demands submitted by the HPC(D)," the agreement stated.

Highlights of the Charter of Demands submitted by the Sanate-led faction on April 7:

Governance and Administration:
• Transfer of SHC administration from the General Administration Department (GAD) to the District Council and Minority Affairs Department.
• Establishment of a Sinlung Hills Project Director Office under the Rural Development Department.
• Establishment of a Sinlung Hills Agriculture Office at Sakawrdai.
• Provision of residential quarters for SHC members at Sakawrdai.

Economic and Infrastructure Development:
• A significant increase in the SHC budgetary allocation starting from the 2027-28 fiscal year.
• A special development package allocated for public works.
• Construction of a truckable road connecting Ratu, N. Khawlek, Suangpuilawn, and Khawlian.
• Construction of an all-weather truckable road from N. Tinghmung to Kaniphai via Zokhawthiang and Vaitin to Zilthawchhuah.
• Installation of infrastructure to support small and medium agro-based industries within the SHC area.
• Construction of a tourist lodge at Saiphai.

Education and Social Welfare:
• Relief and rehabilitation for all HPC(D) cadres transitioning to civilian life.
• Establishment of an Eklavya Model Residential School and a Netaji Subash Chandra Bose Awasiya Vidhyalaya residential hostel within the council area.
• Official recognition of Hmar Martyrs' Day (May 16) and Sikpui Ruoi (December 5) as holidays within the SHC jurisdiction, which covers 31 villages.

Cultural Representation:
• Extension of Hmar programme on All India Radio (AIR) from 20 minutes to one hour.

Mizoram MP pushes for Indo-Bangla trade

| APR 2:
Mizoram’s Rajya Sabha MP K. Vanlalvena has called on the Central Government to expedite the construction of a strategic cross-border bridge at Kawrpuichhuah, aimed at operationalizing a decade-old trade agreement with Bangladesh.
Speaking during the Parliament budget session on Thursday, the MP highlighted that despite a bilateral trade pact signed 10 years ago, infrastructure at the Kawrpuichhuah Integrated Check Post (ICP) in south Mizoram’s Lunglei district has seen negligible progress.

While acknowledging the delay at Kawrpuichhuah, Vanlalvena welcomed the commencement of work on a separate Rs 54-crore bridge over the Khawthlang Tuipui river. This project, overseen by the Union Home Ministry, is situated near the Bangladesh border and is expected to alleviate severe connectivity gaps.

The MP underscored the humanitarian stakes of the project, citing a 2021 inspection where he found several Border Security Force (BSF) outposts entirely cut off from the road network.
Vanlalvena further noted that the Khawthlang Tuipui bridge is a strategic necessity for military logistics and the general welfare of border communities.
