“Loohe-Qurani” refers to the set of unique Arabic letters at the beginning of certain chapters (Surahs) in the Quran. These letters are known as “Muqattaʿat” or “disjointed letters” and are found at the start of 29 Surahs. They are a distinct feature in the Quran, and their precise meaning remains unknown and is considered a mystery.
These letters include combinations like:
• Alif Lam Meem (e.g., in Surah Al-Baqarah)
• Yaseen (in Surah Yaseen)
• Alif Lam Ra (e.g., in Surah Yunus)
• Ha Meem (e.g., in Surah Al-Fussilat)
Muslim scholars and linguists have various interpretations of these letters. Some believe they may have symbolic meanings, while others consider them a sign of the Quran’s divine origin, as they challenge humans to produce something comparable in its linguistic beauty and profundity.
For many Muslims, the Muqattaʿat serve as a reminder of the Quran’s depth, with layers of meaning that may go beyond human understanding.
