Senior State Leader Among Five Killed in Private Plane Crash in Western India

New Delhi, Jan. 28, 2026:

In a tragic aviation disaster, a private aircraft carrying a senior Indian state leader crashed in western India on Wednesday, killing all five people on board. The incident has sent shockwaves across the country and triggered an outpouring of grief from political leaders and the public alike.
According to aviation authorities, the aircraft, a Learjet 45, was flying from Mumbai to Baramati in Maharashtra when it crash-landed near the runway while attempting to land. Moments after impact, the plane burst into flames, leaving no chance of survival for those on board. Emergency services rushed to the site, but all five occupants were declared dead.
Among the victims was Shri Ajit Pawar (66), the Deputy Chief Minister of Maharashtra, a prominent political figure and a key leader in the state’s governance. Also killed in the crash were two staff members accompanying the Deputy Chief Minister and two crew members operating the aircraft.
Initial reports suggest that the crash occurred during the landing phase, a critical stage of flight. The exact cause of the accident is yet to be determined. Authorities have confirmed that a detailed investigation has been initiated by the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) to ascertain the reasons behind the crash, including technical failure or adverse weather conditions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several national and state leaders expressed deep sorrow over the untimely demise of Shri Ajit Pawar, remembering his long public service and contribution to Maharashtra’s political life. The Maharashtra government has announced official mourning as a mark of respect.
Further updates are awaited as investigations continue.

NYIKO AP NEWS | The Supreme Court of India has delivered a landmark judgment, dismantling long-standing patriarchal norms, ruling that children are entitled to obtain caste certificates based on their mother's caste, regardless of their father's socially advanced or general category. The judgment marks a significant step toward ensuring gender equality and social justice under the Constitution. On Monday, a Division Bench comprising Justice Vikram Nath and Justice P.B. Varale delivered the verdict, dismissing multiple appeals filed by the governments of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh. The appeals challenged earlier decisions allowing caste certificates to be issued on the basis of the mother's caste. The Supreme Court held that children born to inter-caste couples are eligible to claim reservation and other constitutional benefits through their mother, particularly in cases where the mother belongs to a Scheduled Caste (SC) or Scheduled Tribe (ST). The court clarified that the social identity and lived realities of the child cannot be ignored merely because the father belongs to a general or higher caste. Emphasising constitutional values, the bench observed that a mother's caste is as much a part of a child's identity as the father's. Denying caste certificates solely on the basis of the father's caste, the court said, amounts to discrimination and violates the fundamental right to equality guaranteed under the Constitution of India. The judgment reinforces the principle that laws and policies related to social justice must be interpreted in a manner that promotes equality, dignity, and inclusiveness, while also recognising the independent identity and status of women within the social and legal framework of the country.
