BJP workers in Shopian town staged a protest today against the proposed hike in electricity tariffs and the alleged unfulfilled promises of the National Conference government. The demonstration began at the Clock Tower and later turned into a protest march towards Jamia Masjid Shopian.

During the protest, demonstrators burnt an effigy of Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and raised slogans against the National Conference administration. The BJP alleged that the NC failed to deliver on its election promises, such as providing 200 units of free electricity per household, additional ration, and employment opportunities for youth. Instead, the party claimed, the government was now proposing a 20% increase in power tariffs, which they termed as unjust for the public.

The protest, led by district president Raja Waseem, concluded peacefully after police intervention.
