Vehicular Movement Suspended on Bandipora–Gurez Road After Fresh Snowfall, Snow Also Reported in Sonamarg and Zojila

Bandipora, Oct 6, KNT: Authorities on Monday temporarily suspended vehicular movement on the Bandipora–Gurez road following fresh snowfall at Razdan Top, the gateway to Gurez Valley. Officials said the move was taken purely as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of travellers.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) Gurez, Mukhtar Ahmad, confirmed that the 84-kilometre-long Bandipora–Gurez road has been closed for traffic movement after fresh snowfall occurred in the higher reaches. “We have halted the movement of vehicles as a safety precaution. The situation is being closely monitored, and the road will be reopened once the weather improves,” the SDM said.

Meanwhile, snowfall has also been reported at Zojila and the upper reaches of Sonamarg in central Kashmir. A traffic official said that if snowfall continues, traffic on the Srinagar–Leh highway will also be suspended to prevent any untoward incidents.

The fresh spell of snow has led to a sharp dip in temperature, signalling the onset of the winter season in the upper reaches of Jammu and Kashmir. Authorities have advised drivers to stay cautious and avoid travelling through mountainous routes until conditions become favourable. [KNT]

’s Kangamdor Welcomes Season’s First Snowfall, Heralds Arrival of Winter

, Oct 6, KNT: The popular hill station of Gulmarg in north Kashmir’s Baramulla district received its first snowfall of the season on Monday, marking the beginning of winter in the higher reaches of the Valley. Light to moderate snowfall was reported at Kangamdor and adjoining areas early in the morning.

The fresh spell covered meadows, pine forests, rooftops, and slopes with a thin layer of snow, lending the resort a serene appearance. Officials from the Meteorological Department said the snowfall was seasonal in nature and resulted from a western disturbance passing over north Kashmir.

Tourists and locals were seen stepping outdoors to witness the change in landscape. Many visitors were seen taking photographs and videos as snowflakes descended over the meadows. Local shopkeepers said the snowfall brought renewed activity to the area, as tourists stopped by to enjoy tea and snacks at roadside stalls.

Officials from the Tourism Department said all roads leading to Gulmarg were open and traffic was moving smoothly, though motorists were advised to drive carefully due to slippery conditions.

A tourism official said the early snowfall is likely to boost local business activity and marks a promising start to the winter tourism season. [KNT]
