A section of a bridge on the Nanded-Tuljapur-Butibori National Highway collapsed near Vishnupuri in Nanded this morning. Two people were injured and rushed to hospital. Traffic was thrown into chaos as police and disaster management teams secured the area and diverted vehicles. Look at where this happened. Vishnupuri is one of the busiest areas in Nanded, home to Shri Guru Gobind Singhji Engineering College, a government medical college and hospital, and a major university. Students, patients, doctors and daily commuters use that stretch constantly. Two injuries today, and everyone knows it could have been far worse. Authorities say the cause has not yet been determined, and a detailed structural inspection will follow. Residents are demanding a full investigation, accountability for any lapses, and an urgent check of the rest of the flyover to make sure other sections are not waiting to fall. Here is the part that should not be normalised. This is not an isolated failure. A 2020 study found that more than 2,100 bridges in India failed or collapsed between 1977 and 2017. Weeks ago, a bridge collapse in Maharashtra killed people. Now another one comes down on a national highway. Bridges do not fall by accident. They fall because of poor material, weak oversight, corner-cutting during construction, or maintenance that never happened. Every one of those is a human decision, and every one of them has a name attached to it somewhere in a file. Asking why our bridges are falling is not defaming any state.
