House of McQueen ❤️🦋
In a bio-play starring star Luke Newton in the role of Lee Alexander McQueen, this 2 hour show tells the story of Alexander McQueen’s tragic and artistic life from childhood until his inevitable devastating ending. This show focuses on what it means to be imbued with a talent ahead of its time, working conditions for even the brightest designers in the business. I learned so much about McQueen as a person, as a designer, and as an icon of fashion.
As for the show itself, the space was well-designed with a gorgeous exhibit of McQueen’s designs in one room and the theatre in the other larger space and a gift shop in the front entrance. The use of technology and projection was also very interesting. At times, I wished there was a clearer distinction between McQueen’s paranoia and reality, as the lines blurred to such an extent I’m not entirely certain which ensemble characters were real and which were figments of McQueen’s imagination.
The cast did a phenomenal job depicting arguably difficult subject matter. While the show dragged a little too long for my taste, I was invested the entire time in what was going to happen next. Aside from , the other major standout for me was who absolutely devastated the audience with her incredible acting chops.
This show blended together three things I absolutely love: experimental theatre, great fashion moments, and learning about new things. You only have a few days left to catch in the role but you’ve got plenty of time left to see - now open at the Mansion at Hudson Yards, a brand new theatrical space!
