Illegal mining will face stern action in Bandipora: DMO

"Legal mining to be streamlined with safeguards"

Bandipora, Sept 18: The District Mineral Officer Bandipora on Thursday said that the administration has intensified its crackdown on illegal mining, warning that strict punitive action will follow against those found extracting minerals without authorisation.

“Vehicles used in illegal transportation of sand, gravel and other minerals are being seized, and hefty fines are being imposed,” the DMO said, adding that regular inspections are being carried out along rivers and nallahs most vulnerable to unlawful extraction.

The officer appealed to people to treat mineral wealth as a public resource and not a commodity for misuse. “Our mineral wealth is a public resource. Its misuse damages the environment and hampers developmental projects,” he said.

At the same time, the DMO said the department is working to streamline legal operations. “We are ensuring that genuine stakeholders can extract minerals under proper guidelines and environmental safeguards,” he said.

The administration has also begun awareness drives to underline the ecological consequences of unchecked mining, DMO said adding that violators will face stern legal consequences.

In Bandipora, District Hospital has ENT but not Full-Time care

Locals say temporary arrangement fails to meet growing rush at Hospital

Suhail Rather

Bandipora, Sept 18: At the District Hospital Bandipora, patients wait in serpentine queues outside the ENT section, but treatment comes with a catch, the specialist is available to examine patients only one day a week. On another day, he is deputed to sit with the medical board, while the rest of the week he remains posted elsewhere.

The unusual arrangement has left the Bandipora Block's lone ENT service in name only. Residents say they travel from far-off villages hoping to consult a specialist, only to be told the doctor is unavailable. “Sometimes we wait from morning till afternoon, and then are told to return after a week. People with serious ailments cannot afford this,” a local resident said.

Officials admit that the footfall at the hospital has surged, especially with rising ENT cases linked to allergies, post-viral complications, and seasonal infections. Yet, without a dedicated specialist, the hospital upgraded to district status years ago continues to depend on makeshift postings.

“Managing an entire district’s patients in a single day is impossible. The arrangement defeats the very purpose of posting a specialist,” said an insider from District hospital.

Locals have now demanded that the Health Department post a permanent ENT specialist at the hospital.

They said that Bandipora’s patients should not be forced to travel to Srinagar for routine treatment when the district already has a functional facility.

B’pora Admin Issues Eviction Notices to 53 Households Encroaching Aragam–Chapran PMGSY Road

Govt warns residents to clear obstructions or face administrative action

Suhail Rather

Bandipora, September 08: Bandipora administration has issued notices to as many as 53 residents of Chapran village in Bandipora who have allegedly occupied a PMGSY road.

Weeks after the Kashmir Convener highlighted the choking of the Aragam Chapran road, Executive Magistrate Chittibandi Bandipora has identified the 53 encroachers and issued notices to them.

The Executive Magistrate of Chittibandi, Bandipora, has identified the encroachers and warned them to remove the obstructions themselves. The notices state that if the encroachments are not cleared voluntarily, the administration will remove them and recover the costs from the residents.

The magistrate has warned the residents to remove the encroachments and obstructions on roads themselves. The notices state that if the encroachments are not cleared voluntarily, the administration will remove them and recover the costs from the residents, reads the notices, a copy of which is available with the Kashmir Convener.

An official of the revenue department said the 33-feet-wide road, for which land was acquired over a decade ago by the government has been encroached upon by the very individuals who had earlier sold their land for the project. “The same residents have received the compensation for the land they gave away for the road, and later encroached on it again after receiving the compensation,” officials informed.

Officials said at several locations, houses have been built on the acquired land, while in other stretches it has been merged into private lawns and orchards.

Residents expressed frustration, saying that the road has narrowed to as little as 8 feet at certain points, hampering smooth traffic and posing safety risks.

“The government must clearly demarcate the road land and retrieve it at the earliest. If not addressed now, this could become a major bottleneck in the future,” a local resident said.

Executive Engineer PMGSY Bandipora, Tariq Ahmad, had acknowledged and assured to take action against the encroachments to restore the road.

The road serves as a crucial lifeline for the tribal population of Chapran, and residents hope swift intervention will preserve its intended utility.

Bandipora Police Crack Down on Sale of Rotten, Unhygienic Food; 4 FIRs Registered

Bandipora, September 08, 2025: Bandipora Police on Monday registered four separate FIRs against shopkeepers accused of selling rotten and unhygienic food items, including meat and vegetables, in different parts of the district.

An official spokesperson of Bandipora Police said the action comes after complaints from residents about food products being sold in unhygienic conditions, posing serious health risks to consumers.

Acting on these complaints, a special police team, accompanied by Food Safety Officers and the Executive Magistrate, conducted thorough inspections of food sale points and stockist shops. During the inspections, several violations of hygiene and food safety norms were observed, prompting the registration of cases against the erring shopkeepers.

In Hajin, FIR No. 79/2025 was registered under sections 271 and 275 BNS against Khursheed Ahmad Parray of Par Mohalla, Hajin Jamia Market, for selling rotten mutton.

In Sumbal, a similar FIR (No. 204/2025 U/S 271 BNS) was registered against Bashir Ahmad Dhobi of Inderkot, Sumbal, who was found selling unhygienic chicken.

In Bandipora town, Fayaz Ahmad, a meat seller from Ward 6, faced FIR No. 203/2025 under sections 271 and 275 BNS for selling rotten meat. Meanwhile, in Pethkote, Nadeem Ahmad Malik of Bankoot Bandipora was booked under FIR No. 54/2025 U/S 271 and 275 BNS for selling unhygienic vegetables and other eatables.

The police confirmed that investigations into all four cases are ongoing. They stressed that the crackdown is part of a larger effort to ensure food safety and prevent practices that endanger public health. Authorities also assured residents that stringent action will continue against those found violating food hygiene laws, including penal action under relevant sections of the law.

Officials emphasised that such anti-public health practices cannot be tolerated and reiterated the importance of accountability among shopkeepers and vendors handling consumable goods. The intervention is expected to serve as a warning to other food vendors in the district, reinforcing the administration’s commitment to ensuring clean and safe food for all citizens.

Spokesperson said this operation highlights the proactive approach of Bandipora Police and district authorities in safeguarding health standards, particularly in the wake of increasing public awareness about food safety and hygiene in the region.

Meanwhile, residents welcomed the action, stating that strict enforcement is necessary to maintain trust in local markets and prevent health hazards.
