Bamboo pit viper (Craspedocephalus gramineus) - Bangalore, India 2025.

A staple during our Pit Vipers of the Western Ghats expedition. Although we technically find this species before entering the Western Ghats, it’s a great introduction to the genus before we target other species of Craspedocephalus during the expedition.

This species can be found in high densities on the outskirts of large cities such as Bangalore, often in very small patches of habitat!

You can join us in India next year by getting in touch now!

Desert horned viper (Cerastes cerastes) - Guelmim, Morocco 2025.

High winds and intense sand storms made finding horned vipers extremely difficult this year. .ig and finally managed to find one after our main expedition, albeit stuck at the bottom of a cistern. Something must have triggered their movement that day as shortly after photographing this individual we came across two freshly hit DOR individuals.

Bring on next year’s expedition where well will h**p for this species using the more traditional method of following their tracks in the sand.

Get in touch to join next year! Dates are 29/08-07/09/2026!

Bibron’s agama (Agama bibronii) - Sidi Ifni, Morocco 2025.

During this year’s Morocco expedition, we decided to focus primarily on traditional h**ping techniques instead of checking cisterns. Although we did check a few and early on one cistern provided this Bibron’s agama (Agama bibronii) along with two snakes.

Cisterns essentially act as pitfall traps for reptiles and amphibians, trapping them until they drown, dehydrate or starve to death. Some lucky individuals are found by h**pers but we sadly find more dead individuals than live.

Luckily, this agama was on his way after some photos and hopefully will avoid becoming trapped again.

Bookings are now open to join us next year for a h**p filled expedition (29/08-07/09/2026).

We came across higher numbers than usual of this species during this year’s expedition, primarily along coastal habitats both in cisterns and on foot during night hikes. Here’s two individuals displaying phenotypic differences, primarily in head colouration which is often associated with this species.

Hopefully we’ll come across more during our 2026 expedition (29/08-07/09/2025) which you can now book onto! Get in touch to hold your place with a deposit today!

A widespread species throughout Morocco but generally found in fragmented and isolated populations. We found this individual in an almost completely dried out riverbed whilst h**ping one evening before our Morocco Expedition kicked off.

During the expedition the group found a number of individuals during day and night h**ping, each demonstrating drastic phenotypic diversity.

Join us next year (29/08-07/09/2026) in Morocco to find this species and many more!

We usually come across this species basking along the roadsides in Morocco. Generally quick to flee down complex burrows but these two offered up the opportunity to grab some photos. It’s been more difficult than usual this year due to heavy winds and sand storms but we’re persisting!

Our Morocco 2025 expedition has just ended but 2026 bookings (29/08-07/09/2026) are now open! Get in touch today to join us next year!

Previous years have provided us with less than ideal conditions to find this species but this year we finally hit the jackpot during our Morocco Expedition! We were fortunate to see a total of seven individuals within the space of an hour, ranging from neonates to a 70-80cm adult.

Huge thank you to all who booked onto this expedition. Bookings for Expedition Morocco 2026 (29/08-07/09/2026) are now open!

A slightly belated Happy World Snake Day to all our fellow h**pers!

Here’s a recent find from our time in India, a stunning laterite plateau saw scale viper (Echis carinatus). These particular populations tend to be more red in appearance, making them difficult to spot between laterite stones which scatter their habitats. Habitats which are under pressure from anthropogenic activities such as clay mining. Let’s hope these little vipers hold on!

Salea horsfieldii - One of two species in the genus Salea, this particular species favours montane shola forests in the Nilgiri Hills.

This individual was found clinging on to this branch in extremely high winds whilst we searched for a number of endemic species during our 2024 Western Ghats Expedition.

We will no doubt be posting more photos of this species as it’s one of our director’s favourite species. Want to search for this species and many other endemics this July? We have a limited number of available spaces on this expedition and our Mizoram Expedition!

A lovely treat just in time for Christmas. Our short note ‘New locality records and notes on the scalation of the Alpine Punjab Skink, Eurylepis taeniolatus (Blyth 1854), from Himachal Pradesh, India’ has been published in Reptiles & Amphibians.

https://journals.ku.edu/reptilesandamphibians/article/view/21541

We’ve found this individual during our 2018 expedition to Himachal Pradesh, a Himalayan region in northern India. Initially, this find baffled us as we were in search of Himalayan pit vipers (Gloydius spp.). Up until finding this individual, the only other skinks we had seen were Himalayan ground skinks (Ablepharus himalayanus) so this was quite the surprise.

Sadly the area in which we found this individual appears to have been decimated by human activity, highlighting the requirement for wider surveying in these regions.

A huge thank you to the authors and everyone who assisted with field work in Himachal Pradesh!
