What can the story of a single dynasty reveal about the many cultures, ideas and knowledge traditions that shaped Bharat?

In Part 2 of this exclusive conversation on Tides of Time: Bharat’s History Through Murals in Parliament, Dr. Sudha Murty continues her journey through Indian history with Dr. K. N. Ganeshaiah on Gen360’s Times and Tides.

The conversation travels from the Adil Shahis of Bijapur and the remarkable world of Ibrahim Adil Shah II to Chand Bibi, Jain king Kharavela and the Chalukya emperor Pulakeshin II — a historical figure with whom Dr. Murty shares a particularly personal connection, having grown up near the Badami caves.

But history here is not confined to kings and battles. How did ancient India contribute to mathematics and astronomy? How did trade routes carry Indian ideas, philosophy and knowledge across continents? And how did art, science, faith and intellectual freedom coexist across different periods of Indian history?

Dr. Murty also reflects on how her grandfather and mother, both history teachers, shaped her own relationship with the past — teaching her to balance historical evidence with a deeper understanding of the people and cultures behind it. She discusses the importance of separating folklore from fact and of seeing history not merely as dates and events, but as a source of lessons for the present.

From Bijapur and Badami to Kalinga and ancient global trade routes, Part 2 reveals a Bharat connected by ideas, knowledge, cultural exchange and an enduring curiosity about the world.

A journey beyond the murals — into the people, ideas and encounters that shaped Bharat across the tides of time.

What stories lie hidden within the murals of India’s Parliament? And what do they reveal about Bharat’s ideas of democracy, governance, philosophy and cultural exchange?

In her first podcast conversation about her new book, Tides of Time: Bharat’s History Through Murals in Parliament, Dr. Sudha Murty speaks exclusively with Dr. K. N. Ganeshaiah on Gen360’s Times and Tides.

There is an interesting resonance between the two titles — Tides of Time and Times and Tides — making this conversation a fitting meeting of a book and a podcast both engaged with understanding the past and its relevance to the present.

In Part 1, Dr. Murty recounts how discovering the murals in the old Parliament building led to a two-year research journey, including visits to 52 sites associated with the 58 murals.

The conversation then opens into larger questions: Did democratic traditions exist in Bharat before Greek democracy? How did figures such as Heliodorus and Menander become part of India’s cultural landscape? How did different faiths and philosophies coexist and influence one another? And what did ancient India expect of an ideal ruler?

From early Gana systems and the election of Gopala to Kalidasa’s ideas of kingship, the episode explores a civilisation shaped not merely by dynasties and conflicts, but by ideas, dialogue and cultural synthesis.

A journey through Parliament’s murals — and into some of the lesser-known chapters of Bharat’s history.

Dr K K Muhammed | Murty Trust Lecture Series | The Story Of Indian Archaeology | The Gen360

How did archaeology recover the forgotten chapters of Indian civilization from inscriptions, ruins, pottery, paintings, and ancient travel accounts? In this lecture, Dr. K. K. Muhammed traces the rediscovery of Ashoka, the Indus Valley Civilization, Nalanda University, and significant sites at Fatehpur Sikri. He reveals how linguistic research, literary evidence, artistic records, and scientific excavation together transformed our understanding of India’s past. The lecture also demonstrates how persistence and interdisciplinary inquiry can reconnect monuments, historical figures, and cultural landscapes separated by centuries.
