KARACHI, Pakistan (AP) — Violent clashes between protesters and security forces in Pakistan’s southern port city of Karachi and in the country’s north left at least 22 people dead and more than 120 others injured as demonstrators supportive of the Iranian government attempted to storm a U.S. Consulate on Sunday, authorities said.

In the north of the country, demonstrators attacked U.N. and government offices.

The violence came after the United States and Israel attacked Iran, killing its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. Police and officials at a hospital in Karachi said that at least 50 people were also wounded in the clashes and some of them were in critical condition.

President Asif Ali Zardari expressed his “profound sorrow over the martyrdom” of Khamenei and conveyed his condolences to Iran, according to his office. He said: “Pakistan stands with the Iranian nation in this moment of grief and shares in their loss.”

Thousands of protestors took to the streets in several parts of Kashmir, including Srinagar city, on Sunday against the killing of Iranian leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in a US-Israel strike, officials said.

The protests broke out in areas with a large Shia population, the officials said, adding the protestors marched through the streets peacefully and were shouting anti-US and anti-Israel slogans.

Iranian supreme leader Khamenei was killed in an attack by Israel and the United States, Iranian state media confirmed early Sunday.

Protests were held at Lal Chowk, Saida Kadal, Budgam, Bandipora, Anantnag and Pulwama areas of the valley, the officials said.

Violent protests erupted near the United States Consulate in Karachi on Sunday, with demonstrators attacking security barricades using sticks and stones following the killing of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, Pakistani media reported.

Clashes broke out along key arteries including MT Khan Road and Nashim Chowrangi as large groups of protesters, many linked to Shia organisations, marched toward the diplomatic compound to condemn Khamenei’s assassination in US-Israeli strikes.

Right after Iran’s state media confirmed the death of the country’s Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei , a Wall Street Journal report revealed that the joint US-Israel operation involved dropping 30 bombs on the Iranian head of state’s compound.

“Thirty bombs were dropped on the complex. Ali Khamenei was underground, but probably not in his own bunker,” Channel 12’s Amit Segal, who is known to be close to Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, said without giving a source

According to the Iranian news agency, Fars News, Khamenei was killed on Saturday morning, right when Israel and the US unleashed attacks on Iran. Khamenei had not been heard from since the strikes began, and satellite imagery showed that his secure compound was heavily damaged in the initial barrage on Saturday.

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan flared dramatically this week after cross-border airstrikes and ground assaults triggered one of the most intense confrontations in recent months. Afghanistan’s Taliban-led administration claimed that at least 55 Pakistani troops were killed in retaliatory operations along the disputed Durand Line, following Pakistani air raids on multiple Afghan cities.

Kabul Accuses, Islamabad Counters
Taliban spokesperson Zabihullah Mujahid alleged that Pakistani aircraft struck Kabul, Kandahar, and Paktia, though he maintained that no civilians were killed in those strikes. Afghanistan’s Ministry of National Defence said its counter-operations began on February 26 during Ramadan, describing them as retaliation for earlier incursions into Afghan territory.

France President Emmanuel Macron began his address at the India AI Impact Summit Thursday morning with a 'namaste' and praise for India for having "built what no other country can".

He illustrated his point by referring to a roadside vendor in Mumbai - one of crores of Indians battling the ghost of poverty almost daily - and how his life had been transformed by the rapid spread and adoption of a digital payments system, the Unified Payments Interface, or UPI.

"10 years ago, a street vendor in Mumbai could not open a bank account," Macron began, "No address, no papers, no access... but today that same vendor accepts payments on his phone."

"That is not a technology story," he said, "That is a civilisational story."

At a five-day summit involving business leaders, innovators, and policymakers from the rapidly evolving world of Artificial Intelligence, a technology that could change human history, he hailed India's progress in adopting and, more importantly, democratising AI know-how.

"India built something no other country in the world can... a digital identity for 1.4 billion people, a payment system that now processes 20 billion transactions every month, a health infrastructure that has issued 500 million digital health IDs..." the French President said.
