India has become the world's largest rice producer, surpassing China, agriculture minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, as the government unveiled a nationwide contingency plan ahead of the crucial kharif sowing season amid fears of a weak monsoon and increasing climate risks. Rice production is estimated at a record 154.02 mt in the 2025-26 crop year, up from 150.18 mt a year earlier, according to the third advance estimates released by the agriculture ministry. The government is preparing for potential weather disruptions linked to the emergence of El Nino.

Persistent heatwaves across India are raising concerns over crop damage, lower foodgrain output, and slower agricultural growth. Experts and farmer groups warn that rising temperatures could affect kharif sowing, grain formation, and soil moisture for the next winter crop.

โ€œHeatwaves are resulting in pest attacks on crops, which was unheard of a decade ago,โ€ Gurbakshish Singh from Punjab said, adding that high March temperatures reduced wheat productivity.

Anant Bahadur Singh from Uttar Pradesh said pulse crops are also being impacted due to shrinking winter months.

According to an ICAR scientist, heatwaves can reduce wheat yields by 15โ€“25%. Tapan Kumar Adhya said high night temperatures affect pollination and grain formation, especially in rice and wheat.

Ratan Tiwari said extreme heat during the grain-filling stage impacts yields the most, though newer seed varieties are better equipped to handle heat stress.
