Baramulla Working Journalists Association (BWJA) Holds Executive Body Meeting

Baramulla, July 3:
The Executive Body of the Baramulla Working Journalists Association (BWJA) convened a pivotal meeting today at Khawaja Bagh, Baramulla. The session was chaired by Haji Karamat Qayoom and attended by President Gulzar Ahmad Zargar, General Secretary Umar Rashid, Vice President Nisar Yatoo, along with several key executive members.

The meeting focused on critical issues affecting journalism, with special concern raised over the growing trend of unqualified and self-proclaimed individuals misusing the identity of journalists. Chairman Haji Karamat Qayoom underscored the importance of upholding the sanctity of the profession and announced that BWJA will take stringent action against those lacking proper qualifications, ethical grounding, and professional experience.

He also urged members to foster mutual respect and cooperation to ensure the collective growth of the association. Among key priorities discussed were operationalizing the BWJA office, organizing a seminar focused on media ethics and professionalism, and maintaining transparent financial records. The Chairman further announced that official BWJA identity cards will soon be issued to all verified members to distinguish legitimate journalists from imposters.

Importantly, he appealed to media houses in Srinagar to hire only qualified and trained journalists, adding that those who ignore this responsibility lose the moral right to complain about the rise in unprofessionalism within the media industry.

President Gulzar Ahmad Zargar, in his remarks, assured members that both the BWJA office and the official bank account will be functional soon. He emphasized the need for unity, accountability, and professionalism within the fraternity, noting, “There is no space for individuals whose actions damage the credibility of journalism.”

General Secretary Umar Rashid echoed these concerns and called on the Information Department to be answerable for encouraging unqualified individuals.

Executive member Arshid Farooq highlighted the urgent need to safeguard journalism from those who misuse mics, logos, and press badges to gain undue advantages, thereby damaging the reputation of sincere media professionals.

The meeting witnessed active participation from several other executive members including Altaf Baba, Aabid Nabi, Anzer Mohju, Sheikh Dawood, Irshad Bhat, Mudasir Malla, Sajad Peer, Fayaz Bukhari, Manzoor Sheeri, Majeed Sheeri, Yaqoob Lala. All attendees pledged their full support toward protecting the dignity and integrity of journalism in Baramulla and beyond.

The meeting concluded with a unanimous resolution to uphold ethical journalism and take decisive steps to curb unprofessional practices that threaten the credibility of the profession.

Baramulla, July 3 : Body of a 13-Year old boy was retrieved on Thursday from river Jhelum at Jihama, Baramulla after Two-days of drowning.

An official told news agency that a young man identified as Arslan Mashook Sofi, son of Mashook Ahmad Sofi, a resident of Jihama Baramulla, drowned in the River Jhelum on Tuesday.

His body was recovered during night hours after it was found floating in the Jhelum near his native village, officials said.

*Amarnath Yatra begins as pilgrims set out from Baltal, Nunwan base camps*

Srinagar, Jul 3: The annual Amarnath Yatra began on Thursday with the first batches of pilgrims setting off from the twin base camps in Baltal and Nunwan towards the 3880-metre-high cave shrine in the south Kashmir Himalayas, which houses a naturally formed ice-lingam, officials said.

The yatra started early morning from the twin tracks -- the traditional 48-km Nunwan-Pahalgam route and the 14-km Baltal route.

The batches of pilgrims, including men, women and sadhus, left from the Nunwan base camp in Pahalgam, in south Kashmir Anantnag, and Baltal base camp in Sonamarg area of central Kashmir Ganderbal at the first light of the day, the officials said.

The chants of bum bum bole filled the air as the batches were flagged off by senior officials from the respective base camps, they added.

On Wednesday, the first batch of 5,892 yatris was flagged off from the yatra base camp in Jammu Bhagwati Nagar by Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha.

The pilgrims reached the Kashmir Valley in the afternoon and received a rousing welcome from the administration and locals.

They will pay obeisance at the cave shrine, which houses the naturally occurring ice-lingam formation.

Stringent security arrangements have been put in place for the smooth conduct of the yatra.

Thousands of security personnel from the police, Central Reserve Police Force, Indo-Tibetan Border Police and other paramilitary forces have been deployed to ensure security. Aerial surveillance will also be carried out.

The 38-day pilgrimage will conclude on August 9.–(PTI)
