Elon Musk’s $1 Trillion Promise Falls Short — By a Lot

Last week, Elon Musk admitted for the first time that his Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) won’t meet its ambitious goal of cutting $1 trillion from the federal budget by Sept 30. The new projection? Just $150 billion — 85% less than expected.

But even that number is under scrutiny. A NYT analysis found inflated savings, including:

Phantom cuts for non-existent contracts.

Projected savings on funds not even allocated.

And questionable guesses about future spending.

One egregious example: DOGE claimed to save $318M by canceling a contract that never existed.

While Musk’s team triggered massive firings and slashed global aid in the name of efficiency, experts now accuse them of promoting “fake savings.”

Transparency? Still pending.
Accountability? In question.
Budget miracle? Not quite.
