Goddess Lakshmi is said to have been born during the churning of the cosmic ocean (Samudra Manthan). She emerged from the milky ocean, riding on a lotus, representing wealth, prosperity, and abundance. This event is described in Hindu scriptures like the Mahabharata and various Puranas.
The Myth:
Churning of the Ocean:
In the Samudra Manthan, gods and demons churned the cosmic ocean (Kshira Sagar) to obtain the nectar of immortality (Amrita).
Lakshmi’s Emergence:
As they churned, Lakshmi emerged from the waves, adorned with a lotus.
Other Treasures:
Along with Lakshmi, other divine objects and deities also emerged, including Kamadhenu (wish-fulfilling cow), Airavata (Indra’s white elephant), and Dhanvantari, the divine physician.
Significance:
Lakshmi’s emergence is seen as a symbol of abundance, prosperity, and fortune, and she is often worshipped alongside Lord Vishnu.
Alternative Accounts:
Bhargavi:
Some texts, like the Garuda Purana, Linga Purana, and Padma Purana, describe Lakshmi as Bhargavi, the daughter of sage Bhrigu and his wife Khyati.
Daughter of the Sea:
Some accounts consider her the daughter of the sea god due to her oceanic origins.
