Kerala has become the first state in India to offer completely free education up to the undergraduate level. In the State Budget 2026–27, Finance Minister K. N. Balagopal announced that Arts and Science degree courses in government and aided colleges will now have zero fees. This is the first time free education has been extended beyond Class 12 in India. The move is being seen as a major step toward equal access to higher education.

ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ବିକାଶ ଇତିହାସରେ ଜାନକୀ ବଲ୍ଲଭ ପଟ୍ଟନାୟକଙ୍କ ସବୁଠାରୁ ବୈପ୍ଳବିକ ପଦକ୍ଷେପ ଥିଲା 'ଅପର ଇନ୍ଦ୍ରାବତୀ ପ୍ରକଳ୍ପ'। ଦଶନ୍ଧି ଦଶନ୍ଧି ଧରି ଦୁର୍ଭିକ୍ଷ ଓ ଅଭାବ ଅନଟନ ମଧ୍ୟରେ ଗତି କରୁଥିବା କଳାହାଣ୍ଡିର ଭାଗ୍ୟ ବଦଳାଇବାରେ ଏହି ପ୍ରକଳ୍ପ ଏକ ସଞ୍ଜୀବନୀ ସଦୃଶ କାର୍ଯ୍ୟ କରିଥିଲା।
ଅଭାବରୁ ସମୃଦ୍ଧିର ଯାତ୍ରା

ଗୋଟିଏ ସମୟରେ କଳାହାଣ୍ଡି କହିଲେ ଲୋକେ ମରୁଡ଼ି ଓ ଦୁର୍ଦ୍ଦଶାକୁ ବୁଝୁଥିଲେ। କିନ୍ତୁ ଜାନକୀ ବାବୁଙ୍କ ଦୂରଦୃଷ୍ଟି ଯୋଗୁଁ ଅପର ଇନ୍ଦ୍ରାବତୀ ପ୍ରକଳ୍ପ ସାକାର ହେଲା, ଯାହା ଜଳସେଚନ ଓ କୃଷି କ୍ଷେତ୍ରରେ ଏକ ଅଦ୍ଭୁତପୂର୍ବ ସ୍ଥିରତା ଆଣିଦେଲା। ଆଜି ସେହି କଳାହାଣ୍ଡି ଓଡ଼ିଶାର ପ୍ରମୁଖ ଖାଦ୍ୟଶସ୍ୟ ଉତ୍ପାଦନକାରୀ ଜିଲ୍ଲା ଭାବେ ଉଭା ହୋଇଛି, ଯାହାକୁ ଆମେ ଗର୍ବର ସହ ଓଡ଼ିଶାର 'ଭାତ ହାଣ୍ଡି' ବୋଲି କହୁଛୁ।

ଏହି ପ୍ରକଳ୍ପର ସଫଳତା କେବଳ କଳାହାଣ୍ଡି ମଧ୍ୟରେ ସୀମିତ ରହିନାହିଁ; ଏହା ଆଖପାଖ ଅଞ୍ଚଳର ଆର୍ଥିକ ମେରୁଦଣ୍ଡକୁ ସୁଦୃଢ଼ କରିବା ସହ ଲୋକଙ୍କ ଜୀବନଶୈଳୀରେ ବ୍ୟାପକ ପରିବର୍ତ୍ତନ ଆଣିଛି। ଏହା କେବଳ ଏକ ଜଳସେଚନ ପ୍ରକଳ୍ପ ନଥିଲା, ବରଂ ଏହା ଥିଲା ଲକ୍ଷ ଲକ୍ଷ ଚାଷୀଙ୍କ ସ୍ୱପ୍ନ ଓ ସ୍ୱାଭିମାନର ପ୍ରତୀକ।

ଜାନକୀ ବାବୁଙ୍କ ଏହି ଯୁଗାନ୍ତକାରୀ ଚିନ୍ତାଧାରା ଏବଂ ତାଙ୍କର ଦୃଢ଼ ଇଚ୍ଛାଶକ୍ତି ପାଇଁ କଳାହାଣ୍ଡି ଓ ପାର୍ଶ୍ୱବର୍ତ୍ତୀ ଅଞ୍ଚଳର ଜନସାଧାରଣ ଆଜି ବି ତାଙ୍କୁ ଜଣେ ପ୍ରକୃତ ଜନନାୟକ ଭାବେ ଗଭୀର ଶ୍ରଦ୍ଧା ଓ କୃତଜ୍ଞତାର ସହ ମନେ ପକାଉଛନ୍ତି।

The Navnirman Krushak Sangathan (NNKS) has called for an eight-hour Odisha bandh on Wednesday, January 28, from 6 am to 2 pm, protesting alleged irregularities in paddy procurement, heavy fines under the Pollution Under Control Certificate (PUCC) system, and what it termed arbitrary electricity tariff actions by Tata Power. The farmers’ body said the shutdown aims to highlight growing hardships faced by farmers and the general public, with normal life expected to be affected in several parts of the state, while emergency services will remain operational.
